DISC for sales

I have heard about DISC before but have not read through the concept, so this is actually my first DISC book. DISC is a behaviour profiling, based on an old concept of human behaviour. DISC devide people behaviour into 4 types: D (Driven), I (Influce/Sociable), S (Steadfast) and C (Concientious). D and I are extrovert, and S and C are introvert. This is a commercial type of behaviour analysis that is now widely used.

This book use the bahaviour reading of our customer and custom set our way of treating that customer. In short you should treat certain type of people with similar trait of type to influence them into buying your products.

This book is easy to read, and useful to implement, even if you are not a sales person.

If you like popular psychology applied into business life (books like INFLUNCE in your top liked book) than this one is for you. This is the way we use science of psychology into business life.

Worth the Read

I run a small services business and thought this would be a good book to check out to make sure I was on the right track with my customers. I found the book worth while. I can't say that I am able to mind read anybodies mind any more than I was before I read the book, but I do feel that I learned from the book. I think I understand more about what a customer looks for in a business professional.

I would recommend this to anybody who is interested in enhancing their customer service skills.

Any individual who works with at least one other person will gain valuable insights from this book. Understanding how someone else views what you say and processes information is an invaluable tool for managers, sales people and executives. A fast read that keeps you thinking all the way through.

Henry David Thoreau was born on July 12th, 1817 on Virginia Road in Concord, Massachusetts. Thoreau studied at Harvard between 1833 and 1837 taking classes in rhetoric, classics, philosophy, mathematics, and science. On graduating the normal professions left him unmoved and, after a period teaching at his own school, a growing friendship with Ralph Waldo Emerson moved his career onto that of writer and observer of nature. Thoreau was a philosopher of nature and how it affected the human condition. He was deeply influenced by Nature and especially the Walden woods. Eventually his published writings were to celebrate this area and his own philosophies. A noted Abolitionist Thoreau was a man to stand by his principles regardless of the minority view he might be holding. Tragically his life and career were short. In 1859, following a late-night excursion to count the rings of tree stumps during a rain storm, he fell ill with bronchitis. His health now fell into an irreversible decline with only short periods of remission. Thoreau spent his last years revising and editing his unpublished works. In the decades that followed he would be regarded as one of America’s greatest writers. Henry David Thoreau died on May 6th, 1862 at the tragically early age of just 44.

Walden

On my short list of all time favorite books, this one is up there at the top. It doesn't attain the #1 spot, but it's up there, definitely top five.

I think it is very interesting to read the reviews and notice that the vast majority of the bad reviews are coming from the young, mainly teenagers who were made to read this in school. The vast majority of the good reviews are coming from the older and the more wizened.

I think the youth of today are just so totally enamored with technology and what's cool and popular. I know I was when I was 17. But then you grow older and hopefully more wise, you live life a little and you no longer care about what's cool or what's popular, you are no longer so enamored with technology and you begin to see how technology is actually killing us. You have some perspective to temper the youthful idealism.

I just loved everything about this book, but I never read it until my 30's. If I had read it in my teens, I probably would have thought it pretty stupid.

I think Thoreau was a genius, both with words and how he lived his life. He did not live on Walden Pond his entire life, by the way. Walden pond was an experiment, not so much a way of life. His time there was meant to show people how superfluous most of our lives are, that it can be simplified, to our soul's benefit, not to mention the benefit of our fellow human beings and the world at large.

He was not a stupid man, he was educated at Harvard. He knew that his way was not the way everyone could or would live. He was not advocating a new social order. He was merely trying to prove a point, that people's lives are way too complicated.

It has been said that Thoreau was the anti-Benjamin Franklin. Realize that even in his day, Thoreau was ridiculed. It is no surprise that he would be ridiculed today, mainly by those who just simply could not live without their iPods.
I read Walden as an ideal and it made me sad. I would love to live my life in the way he did on Walden Pond, but I'm just not so sure how possible it is to live that way in today's world or even how desirable. There has to be a happy medium. You don't have to run out and live as a hermit in order to be able to appreciate Thoreau. There is beauty in the middle way, one can learn to make small changes in their lives, to try and live more simply, as many today are trying to do, to lighten our footprint on this earth, for the betterment of all.

I do believe that people's lives are too complicated, that they can't see the forest for the trees,that their lives are only about making more money so they can buy more things. They have lost their way in the world, they have forgotten, if they even even knew, what life is about.

But running out to live by yourself is not the solution either. I am reminded of the story of Christopher McCandless, whose story was made into the movie Into the Wild. He learned too late that true happiness is not real unless shared. That without love, life is meaningless. And THAT is the reason that living on Walden Pond by yourself is not the answer. We are here on this earth for each other, to love. Without love, life is meaningless.

To live on Walden Pond by yourself for a period of time, to find yourself, or to prove a point, is all well and good, but as a permanent way of life, it's not utopia.

And Thoreau knew this, after his time in the woods, he went back to civilization, but he never lost his soul and he knew how the soul was refreshed... with love, with learning, and with nature.

Missing quotes

Besides irritating formatting issues (as Mr. Wiggings mentioned in his review), I got over a quarter way through before realizing that the quotes are missing! I'd see many lines that just seemed to end with half a thought and a comma or double-dash, with nothing to punctuate his statement (price, poem, song, etc.). I just grabbed the MOBI version from Project Gutenberg ([...]) and everything seems to be in order. However be aware that THAT version has no table of contents (DOH!).

So ... it's free, yes, but you're missing out on key elements of the book if you download this.

Wisdom from a Dead White Guy.

Astonishingly enough feminists and snowflakes could learn something from this book, something called tolerance and perhaps compassion. Thoreau's observations on life and self-reflection are more profound and wiser than all the rant and cant blaring and whining on the media today. His observations on the racial situation concerning the pre- Civil War era are sad and disturbing. Disturbing in that there were slaves in Massachusetts as well in his time. Mainly what one should hopefully glean from this volume is to seek self -knowledge and to come to terms with one's self. Be honest and true to yourself before you dictate to society.

About the Author
This book was written by authors with practical, real world experience, not by academics or programmers. Rick Ellis and Russell Martin understand not only how to teach the software, but also have many years of first-hand experience using the software to complete actual projects.

Rick Ellis has worked with and taught AutoCAD Map 3D since the mid-90s, along with Civil 3D and other Autodesk products. He is the author of several critically acclaimed books on AutoCAD Map 3D, Civil 3D and Land Desktop. This practical background and approach has earned Rick high ratings as a speaker at Autodesk University, and a spot on the national speaker team for the AUGI CAD Camps.

Russell Martin is a spatial data consultant who has worked with CAD, GIS and cartographic design software for over 25 years. He has taught AutoCAD and AutoCAD Map 3D one-on-one, in classrooms and at Autodesk University. Russell has co-authored several books on AutoCAD Map 3D, and has served as technical editor of many other books on CAD, mapping and GIS software.

Here is a book that elegantly shows the potential for comic book storytelling. Deep and emotionally complex, WHEN DAVID LOST HIS VOICE subtly unfolds into a gripping, lovely work.

David receives the grim news --- stage 3 cancer --- at the very onset of WHEN DAVID LOST HIS VOICE. Still, there’s hope. Chemotherapy and radiation offer a chance to beat this, despite his fear. With anxieties mounting, David struggles with how to tell his family --- which includes his wife, Paula, and their 9-year-old daughter, Tamar, as well as David’s adult daughter, Miriam, from a previous relationship --- the news. More to the point: How to discuss his deep anxieties and all the competing thoughts running through his head? Meanwhile, Miriam, pregnant from a brief, casual relationship, delivers a son, Louis.

This sets the scene for the family turmoil that comes about after David’s diagnosis. Each character deals with their fear and their sadness in different ways. Each has a different attitude toward sickness and death. Each is unique. The various perspectives are well done.

This is a special book. It doesn’t shy away from its topic, nor does it meander into sentimentality. With clarity and deliberate pacing, Vanistendael delivers a truly moving book.

A beautiful graphic novel

"When David lost his Voice" begins with David's diagnosis of supraglottic cancer of the larynx. As his illness progresses we see how this affects the women in his life - his daughter Miriam from a previous relationship, his wife Paula, and his 8-year-old daughter Tamar.

Devoting a section to each of these women, Belgian illustrator Judith Vanistendael builds a convincing picture of the network of relationships around David. Her illustrations perfectly capture the personalities and emotions of the characters; for example, a smile between David and Tamar as they set off on a boating holiday is perfectly judged and wonderfully evocative. David himself, although at the centre of the narrative, is a man of few words, and you sense this was the case even before his diagnosis. As he is ill throughout the book you are aware that you are not seeing the full measure of him; therefore, when Vanistendael finally shows us David when he was healthy and happy, it is both powerful and very moving.

Vanistendael's pen and ink illustrations are absolutely beautiful with almost every page swimming in rich colour. They are somewhat similar in style to those of Edward Ardizzone, and her lovingly-drawn lively children are sometimes reminiscent of Quentin Blake. Particularly effective are Vanistendael's nighttime scenes, where blues and blacks atmospherically bleed into each other, as are her evocations of rain, water, and light.

What a difficult topic to write about! It would be impressive to find such a sincere prose story about a man’s fight with cancer, but Vanistendael’s treatment of this issue in graphic novel form takes the reader’s participation to an entirely new level. Her art is alternately breathtaking and amusingly simple. The ending moved me to tears. I read the entire work in one sitting. I found myself asking myself some very reflective questions.

This read would be a special gift for someone in just the right situation.

Romantic rooms

Sometimes astonishing, freqeuently amusing, this book is a peek behind the often closed doors of a variety of Irish homes. From the "Militant Grandeur" of great houses such as Castletown to the quirky cottage of two bachelor brothers with a passion for birds ("The Birdmen of Belmullet") the pictures tell of an approach to decorating that is different from that prevailing in neighboring England. There is a whimsy and romanticism in Irish decorating style, both high and low, that is distinctive. As a frequent visitor to the Emerald Isle, I've been in some of the featured locations (Castletown, Bantry House) and can testify that the other featured locations are not unique. I found the interiors of some of the recently restored buildings to be very inspiring as well.

Vivid and immensely-colorful

"The Irish Home" is a vivid and immensely-colorful volume. Ianthe Ruthven takes us from grand and ostentatious eighteenth century estates to contemporary Ireland's restoration homes (an exquisite example of the latter is Fedany, a former 1870s schoolhouse in Cork, that has been turned into a bright and resplendent abode). There are 200 large and beautifully-lit color pictures. (Ruthven, in addition to being a fine writer, is an accomplished photographer). Some of her best compositions here include the Leixlip Castle series; Phillipa Bayliss's bedroom and bookcase in the Old School; and the two-page spread of Gola Island, a secluded and now largely-deserted isle off the coast of Donegal. Ruthven, both in her prose and her photographs, readily captures what Irish novelist Molly Keane once noted about Irish country houses: That they "are ethereal in their uselessness, and extraordinary in the spaces their designers yielded to one object only--beauty."

This enables me to read technical books with some profit even if I am not conversant with some of the technical terms. A reader who cannot take 'flying leaps' over portions of technical information which he cannot understand will become of necessity a rather narrow specialist. It is an advantage therefore to retain some of the child's syncretistic ability, in order to escape excessive specialization. This book is certainly not for the man who can digest his information only within a well-defined range of technical terms. A publisher's reader once objected to my lack of focus. What he meant was that the argument had a tendency to jump from high psychological theory to highly practical recipes for art teaching and the like; scientific jargon mixed with mundane everyday language. This kind of treatment may well appear chaotic to an orderly mind. Yet I feel quite unrepentant. I realize that the apparently chaotic and scattered structure of my writing fits the subject matter of this book, which deals with the deceptive chaos in art's vast substructure. There is a 'hidden order' in this chaos which only a properly attuned reader or art lover can grasp. All artistic structure is essentially 'polyphonic'; it evolves not in a single line of thought, but in several superimposed strands at once. Hence creativity requires a diffuse, scattered kind of attention that contradicts our normal logical habits of thinking. Is it too high a claim to say that the polyphonic argument of my book must be read with this creative type of attention? I do not think that a reader who wants to proceed on a single track will understand the complexity of art and creativity in general anyway. So why bother about him? Even the most persuasive and logical argument cannot make up for his lack of sensitivity. On the other hand I have reason to hope that a reader who is attuned to the hidden substructure of art will find no difficulty in following the diffuse and scattered structure of my exposition. There is of course an intrinsic order in the progress of the book. Like most thinking on depth-psychology it proceeds from the conscious surface to the deeper levels of the unconscious. The first chapters deal with familiar technical and professional problems of the artist. Gradually aspects move into view that defy this kind of rational analysis. For instance the plastic effects of painting (pictorial space) which are familiar to every artist and art lover tum out to be determined by deeply unconscious perceptions. They ultimately evade all conscious control. In this way a profound conflict between conscious and unconscious (spontaneous) control comes forward. The conflict proves to be akin to the conflict of single-track thought and 'polyphonic' scattered attention which I have described. Conscious thought is sharply focused and highly differentiated in its elements; the deeper we penetrate into low-level imagery and phantasy the more the single track divides and branches into unlimited directions so that in the end its structure appears chaotic. The creative thinker is capabte of alternating between differentiated and undifferentiated modes of thinking, harnessing them together to give him service for solving very definite tasks. The uncreative psychotic succumbs to the tension between conscious (differentiated) and unconscious (undifferentiated) modes of mental functioning. As he cannot integrate their divergent functions, true chaos ensues. The unconscious functions overcome and fragment the conscious surface sensibilities and tear reason into shreds. Modern art displays this attack of unreason on reason quite openly. Yet owing to the powers of the creative mind real disaster is averted. Reason may seem to be cast aside for a moment. Modern art seems truly chaotic. But as time passes by the 'hidden order' in art's substructure (the work of unconscious form creation) rises to the surface. The modern artist may attack his own reason and single-track thought; but a new order is already in the making.

an unusual look at perception and creativity

The author of this book, who died in 1966, was an art student in Vienna and later lectured in art in England. He wrote the book in the sixties, when the Gestalt theory of perception was very much in vogue. His view of truly creative perception, however, is very different from the Gestalt view. He maintains that Gestalt perception is analytic in nature, since part of Gestalt theory focuses on how we separate a figure from its background in order to give meaning to what we see. Accordingly, it demands a certain maturity in the human brain's development, and only begins to be used by children around the age of eight.

Citing research papers on development and perception, Ehrenzweig argues that younger children and artists use what he terms "undifferentiated perception" in perceiving the world--this form of perception is holistic and non-hierarchical. It makes no distinction between figure and ground, or between main subject and minor subject. He believes that on an unconscious level, we are all continuously scanning the environment in this way. However, only small children and some adults are open to the information thus gained.

One example he uses of how an adult uses non-differentiated perception is a chess master who is able to plot several moves ahead. Since each potential move has several possible subsequent moves, the permutations of possibilities inherent in a few moves ahead are truly daunting, and the use of one's analytic ability to evaluate them all would require more time than is available. Ehrenzweig maintains that the chess master does not evaluate a series of moves in an analytical manner, but rather uses non-differentiated perception, which allows many more computations to be carried out on a subconscious level.

His arguments are compelling, and after cultivating undifferentiated perception myself, and raising young children who did seem to use it quite naturally, I was convinced that he was on to something. I've had this book since 1988 and still refer to it when I'm thinking or writing about issues in perception, creativity, or consciousness. However, there does not seem to have been much written about this topic in the scientific journals in the years since the book was published. Not being trained in psychology or perception, I cannot comment on why this is so. Nevertheless, the book has changed the way that I experience and think about my own mind. Moreover, it has helped me greatly in my creative projects, as well as in picking up information from the environment that later turns out to be quite useful.

Defines creativity and frames into a psychological process.

Ehrenzweig is a teacher. The book is challenging, provoking and extending of an experiential vision of what is the psychological base of the artistic creative process.
He has enriched my looking and listening; adding pleasurable depth to both.
There is a small challenge to different psychologies. That is a bonus to students of these evolving disciplines.
I wish I had discovered this work 30 years ago.

Confirms the psychological basis for creativity

Art theorist Anton Ehrenzweig's understanding of creativity elaborates on how artists require a certain ego "dedifferentiation" as they submit to a certain influence of Thanatos - the death instinct followed by a reconstitution of their vision (by means of Eros):

I have suggested that Thanatos, the death instinct, could be made responsible for the self-destructive effect of dedifferentiation a temporary decomposition of the (depth) ego; abstract thought can be seen as a success of Eros, the life instinct [...] (Ehrenzweig 1967: 284).

This psychological dynamic described above exemplifies the meaning of Nietzsche's Zarathustra saying: "I love those who do not know how to live except their lives be a down-going, for they are those who are going across."

In other words, to create art involves a temporary sacrifice of the ego, as both Nietzsche and Ehrenzweig observed.

The insights of the book are astounding.
