Gives a secret peak into David Byrne's writing. A brilliant set of David Byrne's perceptual maps. Great insight into how to collect word 'seeds" and grow them into a thought. Arboretum. A set of words pertaining to a topic, that is then mapped out in organic and diagrammatic form. This poetic and subtle juxtaposition of terms often makes me laugh. I'm surprised this book hasn't gotten more attention. The document view on Amazon is way too light and misses the connection of the topic on the left page with the perceptual map on the right page. The Look Inside! view could be rescanned to benefit how clever this book really is.

Through drawings, mostly outlines of trees & plants, attached to words, David Byrne makes many surprising, some obvious when seen & some not, connections. It is sometimes fun, often thought-provoking, always a display of a brave creative mind at work. The drawings were sold as limited editions & the book is beautifully produced. If there is one non-Kindle book you are going to buy this year, this is it. Or buy a few - they make perfect presents for lateral minds.

Arboretum is a key to understanding the way a very thoughtful man has never stopped making sense. It is probably most accessible to other baby boomers who share Byrne's context. We were the first generation to attend college en masse, and rock music has always galvanized our perception. Someday it will be the text for a deconstruction of our time.

Michael E. Hasselmo is Professor of Psychology and Director of the Computational Neurophysiology Laboratory at Boston University, where he is also a faculty member in the Center for Memory and Brain and the Program in Neuroscience and principal investigator on grants from the National Institute of Mental Health and the Office of Naval Research.

Excellent text for undergraduate and graduate neuroscientists!

This is an awesome text book that brings together recent work over the last 15 years with preexisting learning and memory concepts. Short of reading 30 review papers, Hasselmo discusses key concepts that will ultimately shape the field of spatial memory, particularly the role of theta rhythm in the EEG. For any entry-level neuroscientist studying learning and memory, this is required reading to become up-to-date on the field.

Difficult but worth struggling through

This author is one of the foremost experts in memory and he really takes a lot of time to explain his theories and experimnts. I learned so much from my multiple reading of his book, it was well worth it. This is not easy reading for the lay person interested in the neurological underpinnings of memory but there is a lot to learn from this. If you have the drive to read the book a couple of times you will glean much.

In our own time, we are acculturated from infancy on, to understand our mental life as a narratized interior mind-space in which we introspect in a ceaseless conversation with “ourselves.” Our ancestors, however, were acculturated to understand their mental life in terms of obedient responses to auditory prompts, which they projected outwards as the external voice of God. Although these “bicameral” people could think and act, they had no awareness of choices or of choosing — or of awareness itself.

In 1976, Julian Jaynes proposed that that as recently as 3,000 years ago, human beings were non-introspective. Jaynes claimed that one could trace this cultural transformation over the course of a scant millennium by analyzing the literature of the Hebrew Scriptures (“Old Testament,” OT). This book tests Jaynes’s assertions by examining the OT text in Hebrew, as seen through the lens of the Documentary Hypothesis and modern critical historical scholarship.

Did the writers of the oldest biblical texts have words in their cultural lexicon to correspond to our words such as “mind” or “imagination” or “belief?" Or do the translations into English that employ such mentalistic words (such as the King James Bible) tell us more about the minds of the translators than the minds of the biblical authors?

In sharp contrast to the early OT texts, the later texts of the OT display a lexicon of profound interiority. The writers have become acculturated to experience their mental life as a rich introspective consciousness, full of internal mind-talk and “narratization,” and perceiving their own actions as the result, not of obedience to an external voice, but of self-authorized, internal decisions.

This study includes observations about emerging understandings of the neurology of auditory hallucinations, and supports Jaynes’s idea that while the brain’s structure has changed little in three millennia, culture can and will determine whether a child’s mental life is bicameral or introspectively conscious.

Well written and great primer

Very interesting information. Rabbi Cohn makes a convincing argument about how the books of the Hebrew Scriptures show the evolution of consciousness through this critical period of time. Ever since I was a child hearing the scriptures read at church, it seemed to me that the people of the bible had a very different kind of consciousness than we did in the modern world--at least the world I was a part of.

Rabbi Cohn leads the reader through a fascinating journey, using the ideas of Julian Jaynes, to explain the nature (or lack thereof) of consciousness in the early books of the bible and shows how, as later books came to be written, consciousness began to emerge toward its contemporary form. He also suggests many original insights into the meaning of different components of the Hebrew Scriptures along the way.

Rabbi Cohn is a great writer, and I found the book easy and fun to read. I teach psychology at a community college, and I have often wanted to introduce my students to some of Jaynes' ideas, but most of Jaynes' writings, and other writings related to it, would be over their heads. This book would be completely accessible to them, and I plan to introduce them to it. Anyone who wanted a quick and easy primer to Jaynes' work would be well served by reading this book.

I was about 1/4 of the way through a book titled, "The Origin Of Consciousness In The Break Down Of The Bicameral Mind" when I ran across this book. I stopped reading the above mentioned book to read this one because Cohn has been studying Jaynes thesis also.

The book helps greatly in explaining in a profound way Jaynes thesis from a biblical perspective. For the past couple of years I have pondered the idea that the bible is not a revelation from God, but the history (evolution) of our ancestors thoughts and ideas as they came in to consciousness. Jaynes was a fascinating person, and this book will show you the paralles between Jaynes thesis and the bible. This is a must read.

Rabbi Cohn takes Jaynes' ideas and applies them to the Hebrew scripture taking Jaynes' ideas a step further. It is also a good and more reader friendly introduction to Jaynes' thought.

About the Author

Following several senior positions and 13 years in health service laboratories, G. O. Evans left the post of principal clinical chemist at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, England, to enter the field of laboratory animal toxicology and clinical pathology. He was head of clinical pathology at Wellcome Research Laboratories, Beckenham, England, moving to join Astra Charnwood, and later the two AstraZeneca sites in the United Kingdom as director of clinical pathology.

Evans is now a director of A. George Owen and Company. He was the editor of and a contributor to a number of chapters of the book Animal Clinical Chemistry: A Primer for Toxicologists. In addition to lecturing at various universities in the UK, he has published over 40 papers on animal clinical pathology and toxicology. Other activities have included membership on the editorial board of the journal Laboratory Animals for over 15 years, and he has served as scientific secretary, chairman, and now is a lifetime honorary member of the Association of Comparative Clinical Pathology, UK.
