Case studies of JIT in Japan. A radical view.
By A Customer
This is a translated book from Japanese. It is valuable for the ideas imparted, but is not particularly easy to read or easy to understand.
It profiles a consulting group, in Japan a group of non-competing industries sharing general business know-how.
The focus is on true JIT. Make only what is ordered. Make to order. Improve systems so that manufacturing cycle is shorter than the order cycle.
A scathing criticism of massive warehousing systems is a core of the book.
Any MANUFACTURER who thinks they need more and better warehouse space for finished goods should first look at some of the ideas here.
For more general ideas in related subjects look at writings from the late Shingo and late Ohno, both engineers at Toyota.

The English Assassin, by Daniel Silva

From the New York Times-bestselling author of The Unlikely Spy, Daniel Silva, comes a taut, lightning-paced thriller rooted assuredly in fact: Switzerland's shameful WWII record of profiteering and collaboration with Nazi Germany.

The Unlikely Spy, Daniel Silva's extraordinary debut novel, was applauded by critics as it rocketed onto national bestseller lists. "Briskly suspenseful, tightly constructed...reminiscent of John le Carre's The Spy Who Came in From the Cold," said the New York Times. "Silva has clearly done his homework mixing fact and fiction to delicious effect and building tension - with the breathtaking double and triple turns of plot - like a seasoned pro," praised People. Now, Silva brings his considerable talent to his latest tale of danger and deception, The English Assassin.

When art restorer and occasional Israeli agent Gabriel Allon is sent to Zurich, Switzerland, to restore the painting of a reclusive millionaire banker, he arrives to find his would-be employer murdered at the foot of his Raphael. A secret collection of priceless, illicitly gained Impressionist masterpieces is missing. Gabriel's handlers step out of the shadows to admit the truth - the collector had been silenced - and Gabriel is put back in the high-stakes spy game, battling wits with the rogue assassin he helped to train.

Tense, taut, expertly crafted, and brimming with unexpected reversals, The English Assassin is Daniel Silva at his storytelling best.

Amazon.com Review
The English Assassin brings back Gabriel Allon, the appealingly melancholy art restorer with a double life as an Israeli secret agent, first introduced in 2000's The Kill Artist. Gabriel is sent to Zurich under a pseudonym to restore a Raphael belonging to a prominent Swiss banker and art collector, Augustus Rolfe, but upon arriving he finds Rolfe lying in a pool of blood. When Gabriel tries to leave Zurich, the Swiss police capture him immediately--and moreover, they know his real identity. He's released through some diplomatic string-pulling, but he soon discovers that Rolfe had requested a meeting with Israeli intelligence, for reasons unknown, just before his death.

Rolfe's daughter, Anna, is a world-class violinist attempting to rebuild her career after an accident that nearly destroyed one of her hands. But her physical scars are nothing compared to those on her psyche, left by her mother's suicide when Anna was a teenager. Temperamental and mistrustful, she nevertheless believes Gabriel's story, and reveals that Rolfe owned a secret collection of priceless French Impressionist paintings, apparently stolen by his murderers.

As Gabriel begins to put together the pieces of the puzzle, he faces two adversaries: a powerful group of men who would do anything to bury the past forever, and a hired killer who's planning a spectacular murder. Like The Kill Artist, The English Assassin balances fascinating characters, authentic-sounding historical detail, and plenty of glamorous international intrigue on the edge of a knife-keen plot. --Barrie Trinkle

From Publishers Weekly
Switzerland's shameful behavior in WWII provides the backdrop for this superbly crafted thriller that puts Silva at the forefront of his generation of foreign intrigue specialists. Here, the former CNN correspondent also appears to have settled on a main character to propel his promising line Gabriel Allon, the art restorer and Israeli hit man who starred in last year's acclaimed The Kill Artist. Just a few pages into this sequel, Allon finds himself the apparent victim of a double cross. When he arrives to restore a Raphael owned by reclusive Swiss banker Augustus Rolfe, Allon not only discovers the banker dead but finds himself the number one suspect. The charge doesn't stick, however, and when he is released from custody, he vows to find out who tried to frame him. His first stop is Rolfe's daughter, Anna, one of the world's top violinists and a woman haunted by her family's heritage of wartime greed and cruelty. Allon catches the attention of Switzerland's secretive power structure, which intends to stymie any further investigation into Rolfe's murder and the theft of his suspiciously acquired art collection. The so-called Council of Rtli contracts with a shadowy hit man, known only as the Englishman, to eliminate Allon and anyone else who threatens to expose Switzerland's past. The action unfolds in tightly focused scenes played out across a spectrum of European capitals and more pastoral settings. As a historical framework, the secrets of the Bahnhofstrasse are well-trod territory, yet Silva's sophisticated treatment polished prose, an edgy mood, convincing research gives his plot a crisp, almost urgent quality. Agent, Esther Newberg of ICM. 100,000 first printing; $100,000 national advertising campaign.

ALLON IS AN ENTHRALLING CHARACTER
By Seattle Reader
My review may be somewhat biased as I have read several of the Silva Gabriel Allon series and really enjoy Silva's writing: his pacing, character development and details are so excellent. I have traveled to most of the locations described in this (and his other) book(s) and felt as if I were back there on the streets and cities he described. Allon is, to me, an enthralling character despite his abilities which sometimes seems superhuman. He speaks at least 5 languages and can change the dialect (e.g. German with a Berlin accent) for many of them, can memorize faces, facts and numbers to an extent that almost defies a reader's imagination and of course is one of the world's greatest fine arts restoration experts. He also takes physical and psychological punishment without any apparent permanent and yet, I really want to believe he, or someone like him, exists. I ordinarily get somewhat bored reading a series book because they either tend to get very predictable or the quality of writing deteriorates. I don't feel as if this is the case in this series which, by the way, does not have to be read in sequence. Each is a stand alone story with some minor details which change (Gabriels' marital status and his place in the agency come to mind) Maybe only a masterpiece such as To Kill a Mockingbird or The Goldfinch rates 5 stars but I really love Silva's writing, thus the 5 stars.

Too Formulaic For My Tastes
By Emma
So I've read a couple of the Gabriel Allon book now--the Michael Osborne books too. Without fail, the plots follow predictablel: scheming oligarchs which prove to be the real powers that be, embarrassing secrets, massive greed, murder-for-hire ordered as casually as take-out and an absence of all morality. This is in contrast to our brilliant hero (add drum rolls), Israeli agent Gabriel Allon, his psyche tragically damaged as a result of a mission gone awry, intent on righting wrong (add cape). PLEASE!

And some of the writing "You've killed again Gabriel-I can see it on your face." DOUBLE PLEASE!

I've been reading out of order and jumping between the Gabriel Allon series and the Michael Osborne series-I enjoyed Book 1 in the Allon series if for no reason other than the fact it was unique, book three (Allon) was fascinating but followed the same plot lines as the Osborne series, and now it's deja vu all over again. This book, The English Assassin (Book 2-Allon) is equally redundant, which technically is not correct since Book 2 predeceased 3 as well as the Osborne series.

Unfortunately, it looks like Silva found a working formula and decided to stick with it. After all, it worked for Coca-Cola. The problem is, while the same recipe may work for a soft drink, it doesn't for a novel.

If you want a superhero and a story-line that's all black and white with a nice bow tied around it, this is it. Great if you're stuck in an airport but I won't be back for more absent some ambiguity and originality.

TWO ASSASSINS?
By William Lotz
This novel starts off with Mrs. Marguerite Rolfe digging in her garden. She is actually digging her own grave because of secrets she'd found hidden in her husband's study. She lies down, picks up her husband's shotgun, puts the barrel in her mouth and pulls the trigger.

Thus begins a novel filled with intrigue, danger, murder, double cross and romance.

With a destroyed suicide note.

With two assassins, Gabriel Allon and "The Englishman".

A lovely artist who falls in love with Gabriel.

A Murder in Munich.

A secret list of art treasures stolen from Jews.

An ultra-secret group that buys these treasures.

Were it not for continuing, boring distractions where meaningless, boring facts required much skimming, I would have rated this novel higher. I still believe "The English Assassin" to be a very good read, and recommend it highly.

Anti-Capitalism: A Beginner's Guide (Beginner's Guides), by Simon Tormey

The puncture of the great banking bubble and the dash to austerity has breathed new life into protest movements across the globe and brought anti-capitalist values to the forefront as never before. But what does it mean to be anti-capitalist? And where is anti-capitalism going — if anywhere? Global civil society expert Simon Tormey explores these questions, and more, in this thought-provoking book.

Unlike other, ideologically-narrow introductions, Tormey introduces us to all the eclectic groups — anarchists, Marxists, autonomists, environmentalists — and thought that make up the anti-capitalist movement. Providing global and historical context, he takes us from the 1994 Zapatista insurrection through the 1999 Seattle protests right up to Occupy Wall Street, the Indignados of Spain and the current Greek uprisings. Going beyond a mere descriptive take, Tormey weighs up a range of possibilities for bringing about alternatives to the corporate domination of our planet. This is a fascinating and bold exploration of how to understand the world — and how to change it.

After her first taste of power as a Dominant, Eleanor buries her old submissive self and transforms into Mistress Nora, the Red Queen. With the help of a mysterious young man with a job even more illicit than her own, Nora squares off against a cunning rival in her quest to become the most respected, the most feared Dominatrix in the Underground.

While new lovers and the sweet taste of freedom intoxicate Nora, she is tempted time and time again by Søren, her only love and the one man who refuses to bow to her. But when Søren accepts a new church assignment in a dangerous country, she must make an agonizing choice—will the queen keep her throne and let her lover go, or trade in her crown for Søren's collar?

With a shattering final confession, the last link in the chain is forged in The Original Sinners saga. It's the closing chapter in a story of salvation, sacrifice and the multitude of scars we collect in the name of ecstasy—and love.

The First Wedding

NOW, THIS WAS A HAPPY ENDING.

It was all Nora had hoped for, all she had prayed for, and she couldn't stop grinning as the music began—Jeremiah Clarke's Trumpet Voluntary.

She smiled even wider when two elderly gentlemen in traditional servant's livery opened the great oak double doors with a flourish befitting the exalted occasion.

After one deep breath, Nora stepped through the open doors and did the one thing she'd sworn she would never do—she walked down the aisle of a church in a wedding dress toward Soren, who waited for her at the altar.

He hadn't seen her for hours and this moment was Soren's first look at her in her wedding dress. It had been twenty years since she'd walked down an aisle toward Soren as a bridesmaid in a wedding he'd performed. Even now, halfway down the aisle, she could see the look in his eyes, a look that said the twenty years had been worth the wait.

As Nora took her place at Soren's right hand, she leaned in close and whispered, "Stop looking at me like that."

"Why?" he asked as the two hundred assembled guests rose to their feet when the groom made his entrance into the Great Hall that had been converted into a church for the wedding.

"You're on duty," she reminded him. "Father Stearns."

"Can I look at you like that after the wedding?"

She smiled at him as the two grooms joined hands in front of Soren.

"Today you can do anything you want."

"Watch out. I'll hold you to that promise," he said as the music faded into silence leaving her unable to retort. She swallowed her words, composed her face and tried not to cry when Soren began to speak.

"Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to join this man, Michael Luka Dimir, and this man, Griffin Randolfe Fiske, in holy matrimony. May your love be blessed by the sacrament of marriage and may we all who are gathered as witnesses rejoice together in the beauty of your commitment to each other as we would bask in the warmth of the sun…"

Nora made it three whole minutes into the ceremony before the tears started flowing. Luckily all eyes were on Michael and Griffin as they spoke their vows and made their promises. Once upon a time in a very different setting, Nora and Soren had made promises to each other and she wore those promises around her neck in the form of wedding bands engraved with two words—Forever and Everything. They weren't wedding vows but they had bound them together nonetheless. What was a sacrament but the outward sign of inner grace? If she and Soren loving each other and staying together despite all they'd been through, all they'd put each other through for twenty-three years, wasn't a miracle, she didn't know what was.

"Therefore," Soren said as the service drew to its conclusion, "now they are not two, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let no man put asunder."

Soren spoke with authority and power, as if the words themselves could bind hearts together.

"I now pronounce you husband…and husband."

Griffin took Michael's face in his hands and kissed him.

And kissed him.

And kissed him.

A kiss of love and of lust and of complete and utter devotion, it went on so long the assembled witnesses started to titter, then giggle, then laugh. They kissed until Soren cleared his throat not once, but twice, louder the second time than the first. When even that didn't put a stop to their rather protracted display of public affection, Soren uttered a low "For heaven's sake, Griffin, people have places to be. Can't you save the consummation until later?"

Griffin paused long enough to look at Soren and answer, "Nope," before returning to the kiss with gusto.

Nora applauded him. Good man. Don't let anyone tell you to stop kissing for such a silly reason as two hundred people watching. What better place in the world was there to be than here, watching true lovers kiss? One didn't see such a thing every day. When witnessing a miracle, one should never hurry it along, for it'll be gone all too soon and who knows when one will see another miracle in one's lifetime?

Time stopped with that kiss. The image imprinted itself upon Nora's mind like a tintype photograph… She stood at Soren's right as Michael's mistress of honor—no one would have believed her a maid or a matron, so mistress it was—and Kingsley stood to the left of Soren as Griffin's best man. The wedding was held in the Great Hall of the thousand-year-old castle. The vibrant blue walls gleamed like polished azurite in the glow of a dozen brass-and-crystal chandeliers. Candles and flowers stationed on the ebony oak floors encircled the wedding party. Kingsley, Griffin and Soren all wore kilts. Griffin's and Kingsley's were red, white and green, the tartan of his mother's ancestors. Soren's kilt was black and blue, the traditional clergy tartan of Scotland and bruises. Upon request and because she couldn't tell Griffin no when he'd asked so nicely, she'd worn a Scottish wedding dress, tiered white silk and lace peeking out from under a corseted red-and-green tartan overlay. Michael had forgone the kilt—not his style, he said—and chosen a hip Rat Packera tuxedo with a black shirt and black jacket. A better-looking married couple she'd never seen in her life and not because they were so beautiful, although they were, but because their love was true and pure and hard-won. Every act of love was an act of courage, but for Michael and Griffin it was especially so. The world didn't often reward those who loved outside the lines. Nora had learned this lesson the hard way.

The kiss went on so long the guests rose to their feet and applauded.

Griffin turned to the masses and issued an order.

"Less applauding," he yelled at his guests. "More kissing!"

"No one has to tell me twice," Kingsley said, holding out his hand to Juliette, the mother of his daughter with another one on the way, and the most beautiful woman in attendance by far. Laughing, Juliette rose to her feet and put her hand in Kingsley's. He dipped her back and gave her an old Hollywood kiss.

"Shall we?" Soren asked.

"In front of two hundred people?"

"Why not?"

"Is that a rhetorical question or do you really want me to list all eight hundred reasons why not?"

Soren answered by taking her face in his hands and kissing her—a kiss like Communion, like wine on her tongue. She heard a few gasps of shock from the assembly followed by laughter and applause. Apparently this was the first time they'd seen a Catholic priest kissing a woman. It was a first for Nora as well, being kissed by Soren in front of so many people they didn't know. Yes, Kingsley had forced all the staff and the guests to sign non-disclosure agreements, but that was no guarantee word wouldn't leak that a certain well-respected Jesuit priest passionately kissed a fairly notorious dominatrix at a wedding in Scotland. And not just any wedding—a samesex wedding. Soren could be laicized for performing a samesex marriage. He'd get in less trouble if he were caught by the Pope himself sodomizing her in the Tomb of Saint Peter. Not that she'd ever had that fantasy—not very often anyway. Officiating the service had been Soren's gift to Michael, whom he loved like a son. When Nora had reminded him of the very real danger of excommunication if caught, Soren had replied, Michael asked me. It's my honor to do it. Since Soren was a man of honor that had been the end of it. But it wouldn't be the end of it.

Soren was a Jesuit priest who had kissed a woman in front of two hundred people and performed a same-sex wedding. A kiss plus a wedding plus what would happen tonight at nine o'clock added up to one very simple conclusion.

Soren's days as a priest were numbered.

Nora's Last Confession

NORA PULLED BACK FROM THE KISS AND SAW A DOZEN or more couples kissing, including Griffin and Michael, who were still kissing.

And. Still.

Kissing.

"Oh, for fuck's sake, Griffin," Nora said, reaching in front of Soren for Kingsley's hand. "You two make out as long as you want. The King and I are going to get a drink."

Nora gave Kingsley the end of the long plaid ribbon she'd tied around her bouquet. As they walked on either side of the happy couple—still kissing, of course—they lifted their hands and passed the sash over their heads like a wedding bower. Behind her she heard Soren speaking to the crowd of guests.

"I'd suggest everyone retreat to the banquet hall," he said in his most authoritarian clergy voice. "It seems the groom and groom might be a while."

Kingsley took her arm in his to escort her down the long aisle to the door.

"I heard we have you to thank for the wedding," Kingsley said, kissing the back of her hand.

Nora winced. "Michael had a little case of cold feet. I beat it out of him."

"Literally?"

"It took a solid hour of flogging followed by an hour of wax-play. Kid came so hard he almost passed out. Two-hour nap, and he was ready to get married. I love saving the day," she said. "I'm so good at it."

They waited in the foyer and soon they were joined by Michael's mother and sister, Griffin's parents and three brothers, and Soren. Juliette, wearing a red gown to match Kingsley's kilt, passed Céleste into his arms. And when Michael and Griffin finally emerged from the Great Hall it was to a hail of applause and a shower of rice. Céleste was the best rice thrower of them all, Kingsley assured his little girl. Michael's lips appeared swollen from so much passionate kissing and his pale cheeks were flushed, but Nora had to admit, she'd never seen him or Griffin ever look happier. Today was a beautiful day to be in love.

The guests who greeted the couple with hugs and kisses were a hodgepodge of friends and family, or as Kingsley called them, "the freaks and the straights." Mistress Irina, the first dominatrix Kingsley had trained for The 8th Circle, had sat next to Michael's aunt and uncle during the ceremony. Michael's sister Erin had borrowed a tissue from Alfred, Griffin's white-haired butler, who'd had to surreptitiously wipe his own eyes a time or two during the ceremony. Nora'd been a little surprised he'd come all the way to Scotland for Griffin's wedding. When she had asked him why he'd made the long trip from upstate New York, he'd answered, "He's a manchild and a deviant, and he has more money than sense, young lady. So of course I'm here for his wedding to his shamefully younger boy toy. It's the only sensible thing he's ever done in his life." Then he'd stalked off before Nora could hug him or worse, cry in his arms, which would have been an unforgivable affront to his dignity.

"Good ceremony, Father," she said, smiling up at Soren. "I loved the homily."

"Thank you. The Lord gives me good material to work with. I suppose He deserves most of the credit." Leave it to a Jesuit to be simultaneously pious and smug.

"Oops, picture time," she said. "I should go."

The photographer was already attempting to corral the wedding party back into the Great Hall. Soren started back into the hall with her.

"You can't be in the pictures," she reminded him.

"Michael expects me to be in at least one of the photographs for him and Griffin."

"Soren…this is not a good idea."

"Michael's like a son to me," he said. "When you have a child, you make sacrifices for them."

"All right. Pictures it is. In for a penny, in for a pounding, right?" She took his hand in hers. His fingers trembled, and she met his eyes with a question.

"I'm fine," he said before she had the chance to ask.

"It's fine if you aren't fine."

"I am fine."

"Your hand is shaking."

"This kilt is.…breezy."

"It's like a hundred feet of wool."

"This castle has an updraft. I'm not used to inclement weather in that region."

"It's your own fault for going regimental."

"Kingsley was. And when in Rome."

"How do you know Kingsley's going full Scotsman?" She narrowed her eyes at him. "Did you actually go running this morning or did you two play a game of hide the claymore?"

"I ran," he said. "Before."

"I knew it." She took both of his hands in hers now and interlocked their fingers.

Soren glanced at a grandfather clock and back at her. "Five thirty," he said. "Three and a half more hours."

"It'll go fast," she said, smiling a hopeful smile. "Won't it?"

"It will be the longest three and a half hours of my life." For Nora, too.

"They won't need me at the reception which isn't a reception. I can wait with you," she said.

"Thank you." He kissed her on the forehead. "What would I ever do without my Little One?"

Nora swallowed an unexpected lump in her throat.

"I promise, you won't ever have to find out."

Reluctantly she let go of Soren's hands as the photographer led her and Kingsley toward Michael and Griffin. The first pictures were of the groom and groom, best man and mistress of honor.

Kingsley held out his arm for her and she took it, grateful for his company in the secret they shared. "How is he?" Kingsley asked. "He is exactly how you think he is," she said. "Never so scared in his life?"

"White-knuckle petrified."

Kingsley kissed her cheek. "I know how he feels."

Pictures took half an hour. Kingsley promised to make her and Soren's excuses to anyone who asked where they were. Michael and Griffin could be told the truth, of course. They would understand. Michael had agreed to a big wedding with one stipulation—no official wedding reception. A party? Sure. Fine. Michael, young artist that he was, found manufactured moments like the ceremonial cake-cutting offensive. The reception was only for people to eat and drink and dance. Once the wedding was over, the wedding party was free to get up to whatever depraved shenanigans they wanted to. And as she and Kingsley were the wedding party, depraved shenanigans were a given.

Nora went looking for Soren and wasn't the least surprised to find him in the castle's small stone-and-wood chapel. She stepped inside and strode toward him.

The sun streamed through an octagonal window and cast eight-sided light onto Soren, turning his blond hair into gold in a moment of pure alchemy. In a breath, in an instant, she was fifteen years old again, and he twenty-nine, and he looked exactly like he did the first time she'd laid eyes on him. The sunlight melted the years between then and now. Her hand trembled so it was a miracle she didn't drop her glass of red wine.

Her footsteps on the stone floor alerted Soren to her presence. He lifted his head and turned back to her. The mask of composure had fallen, and she saw anguish in his eyes. She set her glass of wine on the altar and went to him, gathering him in her arms, holding him to her heart and resting her chin on the top of his head.

"How are you, my sir?"

"I don't know," he admitted, looking up at her. "There have been days in my life where I've woken up not knowing that later on that very day, my entire life would change. The day I met Kingsley, the day I met you. Usually you don't know the day or the hour. Today I do."

"Remember that story I wrote about Queen Esther when I was in high school?"

This is by far one of my favorite series of all time and I am so sad ...
By Book Lover
This is by far one of my favorite series of all time and I am so sad to see it end, but I think Reisz wrapped up this series perfectly. Throughout The White Years Reisz has taken us on a journey of the past, so that we can understand how our “nonnegotiables” became who they are.

We have watched Eleanor in all the facets and time periods in her life and The Queen focuses on her becoming a known as The Queen of The Eighth Circle, her time as a dominatrix. The story picks up with Nora returning to Kingsley after her time at the Convent. She is still not speaking to Søren, something both King and her have in common. King begins training her and brings in an expert: Søren.

Let me tell you my heart stopped when Nora saw Søren again. If you follow the series, it isn’t a spoiler to know they do not immediately rekindle. However, I absolutely loved seeing the love, sacrifice and devotion these two have for each other. It was never more evident than in The Queen.

Søren and Nora have never been your typical couple, but it works for them. When I was first introduced to them I was at a lost for just how unique this story line is and their connection, but now I can’t imagine a different world for them. Regardless, I love seeing these special moments were you just know their love is more, it’s not easy, it’s more than sexual, it’s real, unwavering love!

I think Reisz is one of the most talented writers and so freaking intelligent. I love the symbolism and how all her words have meaning and substance. So of course in perfect fashion, The Queen brings us all the way back to the beginning with Nora meeting Wes. When it was all over, I tiered up and then wanted to immediately jump right back into the beginning with The Siren.

If you have not read this series I cannot recommend it enough. Yes, it’s not your typical love story, so it’s not for everyone and I get that. However, if you love stories about real, unconditional love, with lots of sexiness and BDSM this is for you. This series is original, sexy, humorous and full of heart. I know I am probably over emotional, but even as I write this review I want to cry. I never want to say goodbye to Søren, Kingsley and Nora they are some of my favorite characters ever written!

A series end that exceeded my hopes and expectations!
By Robin Segnitz
Back in August of 2012, I bought a novel titled The Siren. Although I had never heard of author Tiffany Reisz, I was definitely intrigued by the book synopsis. What I remember most from reading The Siren is that I was stunned by the crisp writing, creativity and uniqueness of the plot. The Siren won an award that year: Romantic Times Reviewers’ Choice Award (RT Award) for Best Erotic Romance of 2012 – I just knew The Siren was a 5-star novel, and I couldn’t wait for the next novel in the series!

Nora Sutherlin. Father Marcus Stearns. Kingsley Edge. For those of us who have followed along their journey, we’ve learned how this unlikely trio came to know each other. We’ve witnessed the unique love these characters share for one another. We know the disagreements that have driven them apart, seen them deal with family and questionable relationships. Beginning with The Siren, the overall arc of The Original Sinners series spans across a series of eight novels which is split into two quartets: the Red Years and the White Years. Tiffany Reisz brings her characters full circle as she concludes her series with The Queen, where Nora makes one final confession to her Priest – Soren.

With Nora’s final confession, The Queen transitions from a castle in Scotland to the past, where Eleanor finds herself at the front door of Kingsley’s townhouse. She is homeless and jobless, without a penny to her name, and still bitterly angry with Soren. She’s not even certain if Kingsley will take her in, but instead, he surprises Elle with a job offer. He wants Elle to be the next great Dominatrix of the Eighth Circle. Kingsley convinces Elle to take up the whip, the flogger, embrace her dominant side and make loads of money. He dubs her Mistress Nora Sutherlin and issues a challenge: become the Red Queen of the Underground.

Nora embraces Kingsley’s challenge, continues to move forward in her writing career, and through it all, her feelings for Soren continue to swirl with confusion. Underneath all of the bitterness and anger, she still feels undying love for her Priest. While part of The Queen is about Nora’s transition to a career as a Dominatrix, the other half of the story is about Eleanor and Soren. The Queen really does come down to a set of vows made by Soren and Eleanor when she was just fifteen-years-old: if Eleanor would promise him forever, Soren would promise her everything. And Soren has no intention of breaking his vow.

I have faithfully followed The Original Sinners series to its conclusion. When you find a great new series to read, you embrace it, count down the days until each book releases and hope it remains strong to the end. You dream of a conclusion that exceeds your expectations. Well….Tiffany Reisz did not disappoint. The Queen included a cast of all of my favorite characters from across the series. The suspense held me glued to the pages as I pushed toward the climax. I can tell everyone with absolute certainty that I could not have dreamed of a more perfect ending for Soren, Nora and Kingsley and the rest of The Original Sinners! Congratulations to author Tiffany Reisz – The Queen is a 5-star novel and has earned a place on my list of 2015 favorites!

Hail all to the Queen
By Brenda Reynolds
As usual I downloaded (through pre-sale the moment it became available) Tiffany's new book at the stroke of midnight EST the day of release and began reading. For last six books I have planned for the release, with the usual anticipation and finishing all other reading so that I can focus solely on the new release. Today was no exception. I'm a bit stalkerish with her work as I've read everything I could get my hands on that Tiffany Reisz (pronounced Rice) has written. Her fans have waited with desire and trepidation for the last installment of the White years. We desire this because it is more of our beloved story of Nora, Soren and King. We do not want this release because she has stated it was the last. Tiffany has captivated her audience with her innate ability to tell a story. Her written communication to her followers put us on our knees with anticipation and gratitude, Mistress of our Literary kink. We have fallen in love with every character, made them a part of my family and this, the last book...is as though our family is going their separate ways. This is a love story, from beginning to end, of two people that have brought in the unlovable and loved them, made them whole again. Bring the tissues, a box of them, because this is a sad and very happy ending. Tiffany has also stated she would give us short stories every once in a while so that we aren't going cold turkey. "The Queen" has thrown her flogger around my heart making the "Original Sinners" series one of my all time favorites. I will go back and re-read every issue including the stories exclusive to her website. If I could give this book, this series, ten stars I would because it has truly earned every single one.

Review
"This is a much-needed addition to the science teacher’s library. Our students’ inability to comprehend the written word in science text is the single biggest hindrance to their continuing in their studies, and thus the primary reason we often lose them after elementary school." (Linda Keteyian, Science and Math Teacher 2010-05-03)

"This book addresses an issue that is like an elephant in the room. Everyone knows that reading is an issue in science, but ultimately no one is teaching students to read science." (Sally Koczan, Science Teacher 2010-05-03)

"Finally, a book that not only provides sound research, but also offers practical, ready-to-use reading and vocabulary strategies to connect reading and science!" (Jenny Sue Flannagan, Director 2010-05-03)

"Reading and writing can no longer be optional extras in the science classroom. This work shows how the demands of reading scientific texts differ from those of reading literary texts, clarifies the features of scientific text that must be learned so that it's readable, and describes the tools teachers need to teach reading in science." (Stephen P. Norris, Canada Research Chair in Scientific Literacy 2010-05-10)

"This must-read book sets the standard for teaching reading comprehension with expository text!  I have already implemented some of the activities mentioned with great success." (Briana Nurse, Middle School Literacy Coach and Founder of Wellness Tutoring Services 2010-05-12)

"This book embeds literacy tasks into science inquiry to enhance the functionality of instruction, support the construction of understanding, and develop a fundamental sense of science literacy. This results in fuller participation in the public debate about issues of science, technology, society and environment, which in turn leads to informed decisions and sustainable actions." (Larry D. Yore, Distinguished Professor 2010-06-24)

"My first thoughts were, 'I’m not one of those teachers who teaches science by reading out of the book.' Sneaking the strategies in Language and Literacy in the Inquiry Based Science Classrooms, Grades 3-8 convinced me that students could learn science and improve their literacy skills without taking away from my curriculum. The methods and ideas in this book are useful, non-threatening and helped me apply language practices that enhance science."

(Sara Charbonnet, Science teacher, Department Chair 2010-08-25)

Unrealistic portrayal of inquiry science.
By Teacher Mom
While this book contains a lot of valuable information that will be helpful to teachers, the authors do not seem to understand the realities of classroom teaching. Budgets and time constraints would make some of the suggestions in this book impractical in most situations. In addition, the authors glossed over the unpredictable nature of inquiry-based science and the fact that students do not always ask the questions we expect them to ask or interpret results the way we ourselves would interpret them.
Analysis

Fang, et al. make a good case for the importance of integrating literature into inquiry-based science, and there is no denying that many of the suggestions in this book would help students become better scientists as well as better writers and readers of science. Some of the activities described in this book were not new to me, but it is useful to find them all collected in one volume so that I can choose those that best fit my topic, teaching situation or students. A book like this also has the potential to combine diverse activities into a practical and unified framework for integrating science and literacy, in much the same way that “The Daily Five” (Boushey & Moser, 2006) created a framework to help teachers successfully manage literacy instruction. I feel that the authors fell short of creating a meaningful framework for science education that would work in real schools.
In today’s schools, teachers often feel the need to cover a great deal of content in a short period of time. As an example, the State of Alaska Department of Education prepared a list of science terms that students should know in order to be well prepared for the science SBA test. For the fourth grade, the list includes 176 terms. For the eighth grade level the list includes an additional 144 words (Wolter, 2011). Each of these words represent a concept, and many of the concepts are challenging for students to truly comprehend. The advantage of inquiry-based science instruction is that it can create the kind of deep understanding that we value for our students, understanding that goes far beyond a memorized definition. Fang, et al. cite research by Chang and Mao who “found that students who received inquiry-based instruction scored significantly higher on a knowledge-based earth science content test and developed more positive attitudes toward the subject than their peers who received traditional methods of science instruction” (p. 5). Unfortunately, inquiry-based science is time-consuming. Llewellyn (2002) concedes, “inquiry based learning takes more time. However, developing higher level thinking skills, having students pose questions, plan solutions, and gather and organize data are skills that must be nurtured over time” (p. 16). No Child Left Behind (NCLB) legislation has led to a greater emphasis on math and literacy education, and as a result less time is available for science instruction in schools. According to the National Center on Time and Learning (Strengthening Science Education, 2011), time spent on science has decreased an average of 33 percent from pre-NCLB levels.
Fang, et al. do not seem to be aware of the time crunch that teachers face in using inquiry-based science instruction. They do not offer guidance on how to more efficiently teach inquiry science and in fact recommend activities that would require a great deal of class time be spent on topics that fall outside the realm of most science curricula. For example, they describe a game in which students use playing cards created by their teacher (presumably in her own spare time) to categorize science vocabulary words as pointers, describers, classifiers, heads and qualifiers (p. 66-68). While this kind of structural analysis of language might be helpful to some students, it would add to the already long list of vocabulary students need to master in science classes, while consuming time that students could spend on scientific inquiry.
Time is not the only limiting factor in inquiry-based science classes. Teaching inquiry science also costs money. Engaging students in doing science requires supplies and equipment. Teachers are remarkably good at finding ways to use relatively inexpensive kitchen supplies, and many school districts have systems for purchasing and sharing equipment, but science is still an expensive subject to teach. Fang et al. suggest that teachers should also have on hand sets of science trade books at a variety of levels for each unit of inquiry. They point out that, “trade books provide good models of inquiry science” (p. 35) and that “there are many different trade books on the same topic that are written at different reading levels” (p. 36) so that students with varying reading levels can be accommodated. I agree with these statements and appreciate the guidance that Fang et al. give on how to choose good science trade books. However, I think this discussion should also have included guidance on how to manage the expense of acquiring a large enough library of up-to-date science trade books for whole-class units of study like those they describe.
While I feel that this book would have been stronger if it had been more realistic about the time and monetary constraints on inquiry-based instruction, I am even more dismayed at the unrealistic way in which it portrays the process of inquiry itself. The authors describe an “Inquiry-Based Science Lesson on Rocks” which, according to the text, took place in the classroom of a teacher named Mrs. Kaplan. In this lesson Mrs. Kaplan gave teams of four students a box of rocks and a hand lens and asked each time to divide the rocks into groups based on their characteristics, looking for clues to how the rocks might have formed.
“After fifteen minutes, Mrs. Kaplan had each team share what they did with their rocks. Four of the six teams classified their rock collections into three groups. The other two teams reported that they had classified their rocks into four groups. Mrs. Kaplan conducted a whole-class discussion, asking the children what features they used to classify the rocks. As each feature was identified, she strategically wrote it on one of the three chart papers she had previously taped to the wall. She then distributed a set of six books to each of the four teams that had organized the rocks into three groups, instructing them to pick a book to read and find the answer to the question ‘What are the three types of rocks?’ …. Mrs. Kaplan then went to the other two teams and guided the children in making further observations of the rocks. Soon, a consensus was reached among the members of the two teams that their rocks should have been separated into three groups, at which time the teacher handed each team the same set of six books, and instructed them to read and respond to the same question” (p. 10-11).
The implication of this lesson is that students will somehow have classified their rocks into igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary groups. I think the chance of students coming up with these groups on their own is close to zero. My husband is a geologist. He can usually (but not always) quickly categorize a rock when he sees it. However, he is often using what he knows about individual rock types (i.e. I think that is basalt, basalt is igneous, therefore this is an igneous rock) to group the rocks. There are not obvious characteristics that would let students know that individual samples of rocks are of one type or another, even if they knew the categories already, which in this lesson they obviously do not. Students are much more likely to group rocks by color (not a reliable indicator because it can be changed as rocks are aged or altered, and because rocks in all three categories may contain the same minerals anyway), size or shape (which have very little to do with rock type) or texture (which could be useful, but not without more information about what to look for). It is hard for me to believe that this is a real lesson that took place with real students. It seems to me to be a lesson that someone (perhaps someone who has never tried to teach real students about rocks) dreamed up and imagined being carried out in a hypothetical classroom.
Even if the lesson described above were real and would proceed as described, I do not think it is a good example of an inquiry lesson. When the teacher “guides” her students to come to consensus that the rocks should really be in three categories, she is encouraging them to engage in the “guess-what-answer-the teacher-wants-to-hear” game that is often derided by proponents of inquiry. Since some teams obviously got the “right” answer and got to begin their research on “What are the three types of rocks?” it is pretty obvious that the students in the remaining teams need to come up with three categories as well. Is this inquiry? Are students learning the process of science or are they being trained to distrust their own judgment and observations? Inquiry learning is a messy process. Very often students’ observations don’t lead them to the answer we expect. Sometimes students, like the rest of us, see only what they expect to see. In the example above, couldn’t all students have been let loose on the books after making their observations, so that they could try on their own to reconcile their observations with the literature?
It concerns me that in a book about inquiry-based science classrooms, in the chapter titled “Teaching Science as Inquiry” there is such an unrealistic and flawed lesson example. Other examples in the book seem similarly contrived and idealistic. I envision pre-service teachers reading this book and thinking that inquiry science teaching seems pretty simple and neat. When their own students aren’t able to easily “discover” what they had hoped, they will wonder what they did wrong. They may throw up their hands and give up on inquiry science. When they can’t find the time or the resources to incorporate the strategies that Fang, et al. advocate for integrating literature, they may feel that they are not doing all that they should. I believe that such an unrealistic portrait does a disservice to teachers, to students and to inquiry-based science instruction.

A. S. Byatt

Prose that reads as beautiful poetry...
By Caz
My first venture into the words of Gibran was his most famous work, 'The Prophet.' Wonderful as it was, I must say that I prefer this piece of writing by far. What I found most astounding is that this was penned when he was a very young man! These are the words of an old soul who has tasted the heights and depths of the realm of love embraced and love lost. The language is musical, spare, deep... each word carefully chosen and perfectly placed (I speak of this particular translation of the original work). It is a short read but powerful and deeply impacting. This one is worthy of a permanent place on your bookshelf.

Poetic beauty for spiritual insight
By ankh fire
I have probably not read any author with more of a gift for beautiful words than Kahlil Gibran. Just reading the English translation for this collection of his love-related Arabic works makes my bones ache with the amazing insights he portrays through moving language. This book is a very well assembled collection, with a decent introduction about Gibran's life (knowing the author, after all, is essential to understanding their work.)
With a nice harmonized blend of short stories and poetry, The Beloved is an important addition to both beginners' and the experienced's understanding of a very unique philosopher. It also includes some of Gibran's mystic artwork, for which he was almost as well known as for his writing. The translators/editors did an excellent job in portraying Gibran's style and gorgeous words as closely as possible to the original Arabic. No one has had the poetic rhythm Gibran did; hopefully appreciation for his extraodinary gift for language will grow. (PS, if you haven't read Gibran's The Prophet, do.)

This book puts into words so many feelings I have had
By David Borenstein
I bought this book because I love Gibran's _The Prophet_, and because I always call my Beloved by that title.
I bought it to give it to her, and read it first. It put into words so elegantly so many things I have tried to say in the time that I have known her.
Anyone who has truly loved another to the point where you feel your soul touched by their soothing word will understand the spiritual reflections of _The Beloved_.
As for the cover art, well: Do what you do is to judge a book by its cover? This, of course, is a foolish thing to do and is quite silly in light of the age-old adage against it.
The cover art embodies the relationship between love and spirit. "Lust" is not included in this equation. Gibran, as many others, has realized that true love is a glorious and righteous thing - provided in this world by God for those who would seek it. And the consummation of such love is a more pure and wonderous act than you give it credit for.
Such a book had to be inspired by greater powers.

Sometimes, all that is needed to change someone’s mind is a change of perspective. Flying cameras, freed from the constraints of gravity, redefine how we perceive the world we live in and reveal previously unseen moments of beauty. Very rarely does a new technology level a playing field in an art form, allowing unknown talents to share headlines with established artists. Drones are one of these great equalizers. With this book, we are shining a spotlight on some of the world’s best aerial photography. We examine not just the works of well-known aerial photographers, but also the many phenomenal images captured by non-professionals. The subjects of those showcased range from a volcanic eruption to the abstract patterns of fish farms as seen from above, and from never-before-seen views of Patagonia to powerful impressions of the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland. Above the World is an ode to the beauty of the aerial image as it can be seen and captured by anyone. Let yourself be inspired.
