In fact, it can serve a number of disciplines because of the cross-disciplinary nature of its content.

The primary audience is "psychologists, graduate and undergraduate students, and practitioners and researchers in allied mental health professions," but the dictionary is accessible for general readers as well. Though densely packed with 25,000 entries, the text is clear and readable. Definitions are concise, plainspoken, and designed to inform without mystifying readers. See also references are efficiently inserted in small caps within the definitions, and see references redirect readers to appropriate headwords. Appendixes conveniently list the "Biographical Entries," "Institutional and Organizational Entries," "Psychological Test and Assessment Instrument Entries," and "Psychotherapy and Psychotherapeutic Approach Entries" found throughout.

Although a standard dictionary will have many of the same single-word terms, this volume is replete with phrases--major depressive episode, method of limits, naive participant, social stratification--as they apply to psychology and connected disciplines. Some terms, such as nervios, apply to a specific group, in this case, Latinos in the U.S. Another example is myriachit, a syndrome found in Siberia. I feel secure knowing I gave the APA dictionary at my fingertips night or day. Research papers and text books will be better understood with this sidekick. The definitions are clear and concise and very helpful in imparting definitions for unfamiliar words and terms connected to the field of Psychology.

Good resource

This dictionary is comprehensive and is a really good resource for MFT students. I have used it quite a bit and some of my classmates ask me for it from time to time. I believe it has contained most of the concepts/terms I've looked up, and there may have only been one instance when I couldn't find something. I would recommend this, especially if you are entering or working in the counseling/psych field. It comes in handy for writing papers, and you want to cite definitions of terms.

Learn who you are, understand how people see you.

One of my new favorite "hmmmmm, that's interesting" type books. It's not one that helps develop a way forward (e.g., changing who you are) but it helps understand where you fall in the four broad categories of personalities. What was helpful was identifying the personality types of the people you know and why your interactions with them are good/bad. So the book didn't make me change who I am, but it made me more sensitive to the priorities/motivations of other "types" around me.

Here's a gem that delivers practical help on those annoying people in your life and what to do about them. How do you perceive other people--and how do they perceive you? If you dislike all systems that put people in a "box," then you should also disregard your own system of first impressions--it's likely inaccurate. This book will help.

About 20 years ago, I heard Peter Drucker counsel ministry leaders on conflict resolution. He said inter-personal conflict and friction at work was inevitable--we're working with people. The bigger issue, he said, was to have systems in place for dealing with conflict. Is conflict resolution part of your team's toolkit? Or, is it stuffed way down where no one deals with it?

Survey your team and see how many have read a book, attended a workshop, or been thoughtfully mentored on conflict resolution. Bob Phillips and Kimberly Alyn have written a practical and indispensable Conflict Resolution 101 book--and it's fun to read.

For years, I've encouraged leaders and managers (actually--anyone who takes nourishment) to study the four social styles: Drivers, Analyticals, Amiables and Expressives. The authors have creatively communicated what makes people annoying to us (and us to them) by overlaying the social style construct on all things annoying. It's brilliant.

The book delivers conflict prevention and resolution principles, including 10 myths about conflict. Myth #7 is "Harmony is normal and conflict is abnormal." And Myth #10 is "Conflict is a sign that people do not care." The book also suggests how to sell to annoying people. Example: explain to Expressives how their buying decision will "add more adventure, fun and excitement to their lives." (Fundraisers: take note.)

The chapter on "Dispelling 10 Stereotypical Gender Myths" is worth the price of the book. If you've bought into the myth that women are relationship-oriented and men are task-oriented, you've misread God's unique design in people--male and female. It's a must-read chapter.

We are all annoying!

This book brings forth a simple, but powerful revelation: we are all annoying to someone! Rather than putting people into categories of what's wrong with certain people, this book helps one to see different personality types. The book then looks at how different personality types have difficulty interacting. It also looks at how differnt personalities interact well. The book discusses how to get along with other personality types based on one's own personality type. It doesn't focus on changing people's personalities, but focuses on how to work cooperatively, communicate effectively, and just get along! I recommend this book to anyone who wants to try to work on getting along with others without (pointlessly) trying to change anyone.

A Pioneer For Change

Museums And The Shaping Of Knowledge raises many questions about what a museum is and its role in society. At first the book seems excesively dependent on Foucault, and is somewhat repetitious. However, Eilean Hooper-Greenhill, is exploring new territory writing in the early 90's. In the end, her exploration comes together and produces a text that may influence museum studies for quite some time.

good introduction to museums

I found this to be a good introduction to the history of museums and collecting, which really got at the idea of how collecting and displaying art is about far more than aesthetics. In fact, it made me re-think some of my assumptions about museums. For instance, museums have not always been seen as public places. And, as the author points out, even public museums convey someone's interpretations of the objects on view. The person who controls the museum controls the way the public thinks about art and history. It was really an eye-opening book. I don't think I'll look at museums in the same way again.

About the Author

Mark Oestreicher (Marko) is a veteran youth worker and former president of Youth Specialties. The author of dozens of books, including Youth Ministry 3.0 and Middle School Ministry, Marko is a sought after speaker, writer and consultant.  Marko leads The Youth Cartel, providing a variety of resources, coaching and consultation to youth workers, churches and ministries. Marko lives in San Diego with his wife Jeannie and two teenage children, Liesl and Max.  www.whyismarko.com.

Scott Rubin has been on staff at Willow Creek Community Church for 18 years, and he's currently the director of Elevate, the junior high ministry at Willow Creek. Scott, along with an entirely-fantastic team of staff and volunteer leaders, has the privilege of helping young adolescents follow Jesus. He also co-authored two books in the Middle School Survival Series with Mark Oestreicher.

Great resource!

I've worked with middle school students on and off since 2002, and I really enjoy kids during this stage of life. But, if you've ever worked with junior high students before, you know they're a strange breed. It took me a while to figure out how to relate to the guys in my small group. Once I did, though, I really loved getting to know them and teach them about Christ. I also didn't realize how some seemingly insignificant things I did at the time would make a lasting impact on these students' lives. In fact, I think it'd be honest to say that just about everything I learned about kids this age came from observation and interaction, but it took a long time.

The authors of Middle School Ministry are veteran youth pastors and they describe the book as really being two books in one. The first part is all about the psychological, physical, and developmental changes taking place during early adolescence. The second part contains practical strategy for doing youth ministry with this age group. As I read, I found myself agreeing with most of the conclusions that the authors made and wishing that someone had given me a similar book (this one was first published last year) when I had started working with middle school students years ago; it would have saved me from a lot of wondering, some annoyances, and many the struggles of figuring out how to react to certain weird things that students tend to do as they navigate this important stage of life.

What I really appreciated about this book is that it went beyond the typical rhetoric that can go like this: Junior high students have B.O., so it takes a special person to work with them. Also, we need to make sure they're kept safe from worldly temptation as they begin to navigate their teen years, so youth group needs to be a safe place. Don't get me wrong; I think youth group does need to be a safe place (and I do realize junior high boys sometimes have a problem with B.O.), but youth ministry is about shepherding students into a growing relationship with Jesus, and showing them how to make good life choices. To do these things, we must practice incarnational ministry - meeting students where they are. Oestreicher and Rubin get this, and that's the driving passion behind this book - helping youth pastors and volunteers disciple students as part of the local church. They understand that the youth in the church are not just the church's future, but they're also a part of the church's present.

So, if you work with or are considering working with junior high students in a youth ministry setting, I recommend this book. Even if you think you know it all when it comes to youth ministry, I believe you'll get something worthwhile out of this resource.

EXCELLENT!

If you work with middle schoolers, this book is a must. I've just finished it and am planning on getting one for every volunteer worker on my staff. You can tell both writers have had tons of experience and have spent lots of time studying to make this as helpful as possible.

The book is divided into two sections. The first deals mostly with how middle schoolers develop. How we can view their brain and body development and that shapes how we can minister to them. The second half of the book focuses more on practical ideas related to teenage ministry... ie. lessons, outing, building a staff.

I can't begin to tell you how beneficial this book has already proven to be in my ministry. I have already begun implementing some of the strategies laid out in the book.

The one down side? What's with all the parentheses? Goodness there seems to be some in every paragraph. But I know that is me being nitpicky. Enjoy the read!

Randall Munroe is the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller What If?, the science question-and-answer blog What If, and the popular webcomic xkcd.  A former NASA roboticist, he left the agency in 2006 to draw comics on the Internet full-time, supporting himself through the sale of xkcd t-shirts, prints, posters, and books. He likes candlelight dinners and long walks on the beach. Very long walks. Lots of people say they like long walks on the beach, but then they get out on the beach and after just an hour or two, they say they’re getting tired. Bring a tent. He lives in Massachusetts.

I love the blog and was really looking forward to this ...

I love the blog and was really looking forward to this book, but buying the kindle edition was a mistake. There are a lot of missing images, and many of them are also strangely enlarged or shrunk. I'll probably buy the hardcover edition later, anyone looking to buy this stay away from the kindle.

A book that fascinates and inspires one's inner child. Also great for kids!

About half (51%, according to the book, which seems about right) of the questions answered in this book are original, and have never been posted on the xkcd what if? website (https://what-if.xkcd.com/).

Even though I'd already read the other 49%, I re-read them and was glad I did, as Munroe has added a few things here and there; plus, this stuff is just eminently re-readable. It's the perfect combination of irreverent, rigorous, technical, and fascinating. I look forward to every new "What If" (he posts them each Tuesday or Wednesday) and am always delighted to read the latest.

Even if you've read every "What if" ever posted to the website, this book is still for you - it's especially for you! This is a great way to enjoy older questions and answers over again, updated, and to share them with new people, and the new questions and answers - never featured on the website - are delightful; I won't spoil it for you, but my favorite has to be the answer to "If a bullet with the density of a neutron star were fired from a handgun (ignoring the how) at the Earth's surface, would the Earth be destroyed?"

If you have even a passing interest in science and ever enjoy daydreaming about the fantastic or the ridiculous, this book is for you. If you don't think that you enjoy those things, this book will prove to you that you do.

Also, this is a really great gift idea for basically anyone in your life who can read. Kids will love it, adults will love it (I'm ordering a copy for my dad's birthday), and they will be hooked from the first page (who hasn't wondered what would happen if the Earth suddenly stopped spinning?)

Gift season is coming up; thanks to this book my Christmas shopping will be a great deal easier. I don't usually write reviews, but I logged in and made an exception here. I cannot offer higher praise. Enjoy!

Ruined by tiny, impossible-to-decipher drawings on Kindle

I love the text, but it's a shame the drawings are so teeny tiny on the Kindle version of the book that it's almost impossible to see what they are supposed to be. 5 stars when this is fixed.
