A decent book, but not accurate for most of Freemasonry.

The book is okay, as some rituals match those of the US and the UK, however, the problem is that several are out of order, and one no longer done. It looks like it was copied from Charles McClenachan's book, but the order not held. Since there is a Russian e-mail listed in the book, they could be Russian.

Finally - A serious book about a seriously great band

I cannot think of any band or ensemble who deserved a serious and scholarly book more than Soft Machine. Graham Bennett's book, while overdue by decades, does not disappoint - it is excellent and obviously a labor of love. Soft Machine when they were great - meaning their first four recordings - were not rock, were not jazz, they were simply something else. Not "other" only because labels did not fit but truly new music. Serious music that hugged the outside lanes of fuzz tones, humor, highly evolved compositions, great soloing, no guitar, odd time signatures with beautiful melodies, plaintive vocals about everyday things all delivered at Marshall stack volume. If you were paying attention you knew immediately that this was something special until of course it wasn't.
Graham Bennet captures the history of how Soft Machine achieved this - their influences, the exposure they received opening for Jimi Hendrix on his first two tours, their intelligence as well as the tensions that finally caused the collapse and entropy. I have never been as moved by a band since and thanks to Graham's tremendous book you can also get the sense of what was. Buy it.

A pretty exhaustive study of all permutations of the band and back grounds of each member.There are no drug related stories ,no hotel rooms
being destroyed.These guys were serious muscians.Many people complain that when Robert Wyatt was fired from the band that they were never
the same.I say he was a marginal singer at best and he would of left eventually because he was't happy with the music and with Ratledge and Hopper.They went in a more Free jazz direction with Elton Dean on 3 and 4 and with Jenkins,Marshall and Babbington a more melodic theme based.Alan Holdsworth and John Etheridge pushed them more into a jazz-rock direction on Bundles and Softs respectively.Ratledge left with Softs
and there were no more original members.

Not just for fans of Soft Machine's music. It also is a fascinating story describing the turbulent interpersonal chemistry that eventually drove out all of the original members, leaving only replacements. There are no real "bad guys" behind the that turbulence, just vastly different, and talented, personalities. The discography is extensive, the photos are vintage, and the gig index is exhaustive.

ANOTHER GEM IN THE "WAR PLANES ..." SERIES

This publication, in the same very compact format as Volumes 1 to 4, covers flying boats (with 1 seaplane ring-in). As to what appears below, it follows closely on the content of my previous reviews relating to this series, for which I make no apologies.

Small in format, but big on information (albeit somewhat constrained by the small format), this volume appears to cover all flying boats either in service or which reached at least prototype stage, during WW2 together with a generous selection of B&W photos and the usual high quality 3-views by Dennis Punnett.

Green's love of his subject matter is obvious, as is the attention to detail which renders him pre-eminent in the field. These works remain as relevant today as they did 40 years ago when first published. (Mine dates from 1967)

If you have an abiding interest in WW2 aircraft and crave quality information, this is your go! So do yerselves a favour and seek it out. You won't be disappointed.

About the Author
Vos was born in the Netherlands an emigrated to the USA in 1881. He earned degrees from Calvin Theological Seminary, Princeton Theological Seminary, and the University of Strasbourg (Ph.D. in Arabic). In 1894 he was ordained as a minister in the Presbyterian Church in the USA. Before beginning his 39-year tenure on Princeton's faculty, he was professor of systematic and exegetical theology at Calvin for five years.

Brilliant insight into the unfolding of God's redemption & revelation

"Biblical Theology: Old & New Testaments" is Dr. Vos' most famous and comprehensive work. Dr. Geerhardus Vos served as Professor of Biblical Theology at Princeton Theological Seminary for 39 years starting in 1894, exercising a significant influence on many eminent theologians of the 20th century, such as Machen, Murray, & Van Til. His insight into Biblical revelation is truly profound, and of his writings that I have read, this book is probably the best place to start. When the current faculty of Westminster Seminary (PA) had their (short) personal reading recommendations listed at the bookstore, this book found its way onto more lists than perhaps any other besides Calvin's Institutes. It would also be well worth introducing this book by reading Vos' inaugural address to the faculty of Princeton, available online.

It should be pointed out from the outset, that the term "Biblical Theology" is itself rather unfortunate, as Dr. Vos points out in his introduction, since all true theology has the Bible as its source and its criterion. In his inaugural address (henceforth IA), he said that "Biblical Theology, rightly defined, is nothing else than the exhibition of the organic process of supernatural revelation in its historic continuity and multiformity." Systematic Theology, for example, examines and organizes revelation systematically and logically, whereas Biblical Theology operates historically. It is important to understand that, as Vos always insisted, neither of the disciplines is more biblical than the other. Rather, they are two ways of studying the same phenomena from different perspectives.

The concept of the organic nature of revelation is prominent. Dr. Vos traces the growth of revelation as it parallels redemption. The great events in the history of redemption were accompanied by corresponding revelation. He saw that "the heart of divine truth, that by which men live, must have been present from the outset, and that each subsequent increase consisted in the unfolding of what was germinally contained in the beginning of revelation. The Gospel of Paradise is such a germ in which the Gospel of Paul is potentially present; and the Gospel of Abraham, of Moses, of David, of Isaiah and Jeremiah, are all expansions of this original message of salvation, each pointing forward to the next stage of growth, and bringing the Gospel idea one step nearer to its full realization." (IA) It will be seen how squarely opposed this view of Scripture is to Dispensationalism.

Another central feature of revelation brought out by Vos is its multiformity, an understanding of which is absolutely indispensable for proper Biblical interpretation. The great pitfall, to which probably all of us fall prey to some extent, is to exalt one aspect or feature of Biblical truth at the expense of another. A result would be, for example, Martin Luther's aversion to the book of James, based on his perception of its contradictory character to the teachings of the Apostle Paul. Not only does the truth have many facets which form an organic unity, but the time and the people that God chose to give His revelation were uniquely chosen to best emphasize the particular ideas. In Vos' words, "The truth having inherently many sides, and God having access to and control of all intended organs of revelation, shaped each one of these for the precise purpose to be served. The Gospel having a precise, doctrinal structure, the doctrinally-gifted Paul was the fit organ for expressing this, because his gifts had been conferred and cultivated in advance with a view to it."

Vos traces the history of revelation, beginning with the pre-redemptive revelation, through the periods of Noah, the Patriarchs, Moses, and finally the prophets in the Old Testament, and then on to the revelation preceding the birth of Jesus as well as Jesus' own self-disclosure in the four Gospels. He does not specifically address the remainder of the New Testament in this book. Vos' great strength is perceiving the unfolding progress of the plan of God for redemption, and he helped me understand things in the Bible that I never saw before. For instance, he describes how the period leading up to Noah was intended to show to mankind, starting immediately after the fall, just how far sin would go if it was left to itself. He explains how the division of tongues at Babel was a redemptive act of God, out of faithfulness to his promise to not destroy the earth again, since "if the whole of humanity had remained concentrated, the power of sin would likewise have remained united, and doubtless soon again have reached stupendous proportions."

In terms of difficulty, I think that Vos should be well within reach of anyone who is willing to concentrate a little bit. It is not light reading, but I did not find it nearly as demanding as, for instance, Van Til. It is probably true that the more effort you put into it, the more you will get out, but I did not find this book to be a chore to read by any means. I enjoyed this book very much, and I believe that my understanding of God's Word has been greatly helped by reading it. I hope that what I have said here will encourage others to read this book, as I am confident that it will be very beneficial to a believer's understanding of God's Word.

An EXCELLENT volume on Biblical Theology. A veritable treasure....

I was introduced to this text by a professor at Westminster Theological Seminary in California. On my first read I found the text ponderous, bombastic, pretentious and needlessly wordy. But on the third read I realized that my initial judgment was out of sheer ignorance.

This book by Vos is, to put it simply, excellent and immensely rewarding. The text is chock full of beautiful insights and poignant theology.

Even if you do not buy into Reformed Theology this book will give you much food for thought and most likely uplift you to new heights. Please do not make the mistake of not reading this book because you happen to belong to a denomination that does not endorse the covenantal paradigm. That would be a significant mistake and you will miss out on some profound theological insights.

If there is one book on Biblical Theology that you must have then make it Vos. Yes, it is a difficult read but well worth the effort.

If you love Van Til...

you need to read Vos.

This book is not for beginning students of the Bible, to be certain. There is a level of complexity and development here that can easily overwhelm people. However, that being said, Vos' Biblical Theology is a tremendously valuable resource and worth plowing through several times.

If you are a fan of Van Til's presuppositional apologetics, this volume is critical reading. According to Scott Oliphint, the Reformed understanding of Scripture that Van Til takes as a given is based upon his studies under Vos. So, if you're trying to wrestle through Van Til and are trying to faithfully understand where he is coming from, you need to absorb what Vos has to say.

A note on the level of complexity here: I've discovered that many people shy away from studying the Bible carefully. We enjoy 30 second sound-bites and easy to memorize verses. Vos tackles the whole scope and breadth of the Bible in a way that is truly foreign to a slick, pre-packaged post-modern culture. We want edgy but we want it with a glossy cover and intriguing layout. We want controversial so long as it looks sexy.

I was required to read this book twice during my three years of seminary. The first attempt was after only six months of seminary under my belt. I couldn't make heads or tails of what Vos was saying. The sad truth was that I simply didn't know my Bible well enough to appreciate what he was saying. Two years later, I've read it again - this time it made so much more sense. Again, this is because I've immersed myself in God's Word and become much more familiar with the different biblical writers.

Biblical theology, at least from an evangelical standpoint, is looking at Scripture, from Genesis to Revelation, attempting to grasp how the various ideas are organically related to each other. We assume that God is the Lord of history and that he is working all things together for his own glory. For instance, the promise which is given in Genesis 3:15, is the seed that will eventually grows up into fulfillment in the person and work of Jesus Christ.

BT is principally concerned with history - the progressive building upon prior promises and ideas.
Systematic Theology is principally interested in logical relationships - ordering and structuring ideas so that they can be grasped easily and clearly.

BT and ST are absolutely necessary for each other - BT considers things in a line of progression and ST considers things in their relationship to each other. ST establishes the perimeter of correct thought and BT establishes the nuanced layers and complexity within that perimeter.

The trouble with most BT is that it is a.) interested in the new and undiscovered (a fascination with `novelitus') and b.) often unbalanced, finding connections and relationships that are unwarranted by Scripture. Vos has mastered the careful balance and it shows.

As a final note - as you read Vos, you'll find that he's arguing with Liberal theologians of his day - interacting with the critics of the late 19th and early 20th century. The temptation is to skip by these critiques or to be frustrated by them. However, the presuppositions of those critics - anti-supernatural, humanistic, and evolutionary - are principally the same for the modern critic as well. The specific arguments have changed a little, the names of the critics are different, but the underlying anti-Christian assumptions remain the same. Vos proves his value and worth by refuting them gently and firmly from the text of Scripture while exposing their false worldview.

Vos isn't new, but he's solid. Worth having in your library if you take the time to carefully examine and work through his exegesis of the text. It is also humbling to realize how little you know and how much more there is to be grasped.

The original printing of Testing Computer Software set the standard for the emerging field of test engineering with a full tour of the state of the art in managing the testing process. The reissued text makes this classic out-of-print text available once again. Though it relies heavily on older examples (including MS-DOS) and has not been updated, this text is still a worthwhile resource for practical-minded advice on the realities of testing.

The best thing about Testing Computer Software is its practical point-by-point guide to everyday software testing, from creating a test plan, to writing effective bug reports, to working with programming staff and management to fix bugs.

That said, this book's early frame of reference shows how far we've come. (The book relies heavily on MS-DOS examples and features some truly embarrassing anachronisms, including the mention of testing dot-matrix printers and even EGA/VGA video modes.) The bibliography stops at sources from 1992 and features many references from the 1980s. Nowadays, automated software testing tools are the staple of any testing strategy. This book even advocates a wait-and-see approach to the "new" Microsoft Test.

These limitations aside, there is still a good deal to mine here. Much of the approach to testing is still very valid for any aspiring or working test engineer. Clearly, readers of the first edition will have little reason to upgrade to this second edition, but for anyone who appreciates a "classic" (and indeed a pioneering) text in the field of software testing, it's good to have Testing Computer Software in print again. --Richard Dragan

Excellent orientation for new test professionals

When I first read this book over eight years ago I was less than enthusiastic. At the time I felt that the approach was not rigorous enough. Over time I came to appreciate the pragmatism and how the approach in this book reflects the realities of software testing instead of a rigid, purist view as an unattainable ideal.
Everything the new or intermediate test professional needs to know is covered. The practices and techniques provided will foster sound QA practices and will step you through developing test strategies, and from those, developing and executing test cases. These are the real essence of testing, and this book covers them exceptionally well.
I like the coverage of testing systems and artifacts that are not software - documentation, hardware, and localization testing advice shows that testing is not limited to software. As importantly, the chapter on legal consequences of software defects will show testing in a perspective that is often overlooked, even by seasoned test professionals.
If you are new to software testing, or have some experience, but no formal training, this book will provide you with the right way to approach software testing, and will give insights that would take years to learn on your own.

I am a CCNA, CCDA, MCSE, MCP, Network+, etc. certified person who is currently persuing a career in Exploratory Testing testing printers at HP.
This book was recommended to me by my test lead from Satisfice.
It presents very useful information in a refreshing style that allows you to apply it to your testing immediatly.
Anyone who wants to improve their thinking process should purchase this book, no matter how little or how much experience you have this book is worth having :)

About the Author

Michael A. Smith has been involved in hockey for over 40 years as a player, as a coach and as general manager of the New York Rangers, Colorado Rockies, Chicago Blackhawks and Team USA. He was an adviser for the National Hockey League and has traveled extensively as a lecturer and studied European training methods in Russia and Sweden. Hockey is a game played by young athletes and a game in which youth is not entirely determined by age. NHL players bring the same enthusiasm to the rink as eight-year-olds, and no matter what level the players, it is the coach's responsibility to create an atmosphere and environment that gives shape to that enthusiasm. Games are fun. That is why people of all ages play them.

The techniques explained in these pages are cut-and-dried; the diagrams and text are brief and to the point. Coaches reading this book, however, need to remember that their job is to bring these plays to life and that the lessons contained in this book are intended to channel players' excitement, never to stifle it.

This book focuses on the different systems that are part of hockey. There is no one system, no best system, no secret system. Hockey systems are not complex or difficult to learn, although some, it is true, can be challenging to execute. They do take teamwork, though, and it is part of the coach's job-actually, a major part-to foster an eager and effective team spirit and, once it exists, to orchestrate its actions.

When I started coaching in the early'70s, I thought the road to being a good coach was straight. If I learned A and then B and C, and so on, I would become a skilled coach and know everything I needed to know. But I discovered that the more I learned, the less I knew for sure. What once looked clear and simple often became gray and diffused.

I concluded that a good coach had to become an artist and that the process of guiding a hockey team was subjective. I learned that a good coach must constantly create if he is to enable his players and his team to grow.

The purpose of this book, then, is to provide resources for coaches who are caught up in their own creative efforts. These chapters include different systems for hockey's defensive, offensive and special team situations. Teaching methods and drills are provided, and the systems run the gamut from the conservative to the aggressive. Some systems are designed specifically for big physical teams or for fast-skating and highly skilled teams or for teams that have both. In this book, there should be a system for every coach.

But here is a warning. Despite the look of this book, hockey is definitely not a game of x's and o's. Diagrams help, but a coach is in trouble if ever he thinks players can learn the game from a chalkboard. It is vital not to make hockey rigid. It is a fast-flowing game with the opportunity for physical confrontation, and it is important for the coach to incorporate both the flow and the physical elements into his plans.

In a sense, the game of hockey resembles jazz. Talents and skills are necessary, but a basic framework is required within which to exercise these abilities. Both jazz and hockey demand improvisation; the individual player doing the extra unexpected bit makes the system work. The individuals play off each other and constantly adjust to one another, and in hockey, just as in jazz, too much planning can ruin everything.

There is no perfect system. Different coaching philosophies emphasize different techniques. Coaches who believe in aggressive, attacking play proceed differently than coaches who believe in a conservative, close-checking approach. Some coaches want aggression in some zones and conservative play in others, and a coach must come to grips with his philosophy of the game before selecting specific systems for play in any one of them.

Once a coach has decided what kind of team he has at his disposal and knows roughly how he wants to proceed, this book can help him lay out his plans. It can help with adjustments to his present techniques, and maybe contains a couple of ideas he hasn't thought of before. Later in the season, when the team is in a slump and enthusiasm is slipping away, perhaps this book can even supply a little of the creative magic that every coach should always be looking for.

Great book!

Easy to read, easy to navigate. A great amount of plays in various game situations in all 3 zones.

The best part are the step-by-step diagrams that display the movements and options available within that specific play.

The book doesn't just tell you what's supposed to happen with 1 diagram filled with squiggly lines; it shows you the progression of the play, step-by-step. I love that feature!

Tremendous resource for any beginning to novice level hockey coach.

Not bad

After searching the web endlessly for any help with winger positioning, I went ahead and took the risk of buying this book. I was very suprised at how much I didn't know about the game I play. Even though this book is flooded with play after play, I gained a better understanding of all the drills I've had to run over a lifetime of practices. I recommend "reading" this book if you're someone who, like me, needs every line explained and detailed in order to understand why your coach keeps yelling at you when you thought you were executing the play correctly.

They maintain that anyone can achieve "enlightened" wealth, a utopia where everyone has money and tithes, creating a better world for all. Hansen and Allen's approach is a mix of self-help and money talk, though a bit heavier on the former. The left-hand pages are a simplified explanation of how to amass millions, with options such as write a book, buy and sell real estate and start a company. The right-hand pages illustrate the same themes, via fictionalized dramas, e.g., newly widowed Michelle's struggle to come up with $1 million in cash to get her two children back from her in-laws. Hansen and Allen's feel-good suggestions run along the lines of "find a mentor," "use a fulcrum" and "be part of a team." Full of endless acronyms (e.g., "System: Save Your Self Time Energy Money"), catchy phrases (e.g., "A Dream + A Team + A Theme = Millionaire Streams") and animal imagery (butterflies, honeybees, owls and hares scamper among the pages), this offering echoes much of the self-help cacophony already out there. But its message is muddled: sometimes the millions are yours for the asking, and sometimes it's the system that keeps you down.

They have combined forces to produce this step-by-step guide for becoming a millionaire in a short period of time. In an unusual format, the right-hand pages depict the fictional story of Michelle, a lowly waitress and mother of two who breaks out to pursue her dream of creating her own business and owning income-producing real estate. The left-hand pages are organized into what the authors call Millionaire Minutes--short lessons for becoming an "enlightened millionaire." Although they offer some suggestions on how to go about this, the lessons consist mostly of trite inspirational phrases and affirmations such as "you are your wealth," "clarity is power," and "I think like a millionaire." There are short sections on the power of leverage, networking, and systems thinking, and some specifics are discussed, such as 11 nothing-down techniques, but on the whole, it's a very brief overview with many suggestions and very little practical advice on how to carry them out. It's all just too easy, and the story of Michelle does little to improve the situation as it is quite tedious and unremarkable. Nevertheless, insipid inspiration sells. Worst Get Rich Book Ever

Let me summarize their get super-easy get rich "ideas"

1. Just invent something that everyone will buy!

2. Just write a best selling book!

3. Just spam a hundred thousand people selling a product, like an e-book that cost you nothing to make, but your time, and sell it for $1,000, and you'll get your million! They repeatedly use 1% spam response rates, though it's more like .0037% spam rates, I already know their solution, SPAM MORE! If you haven't got any spam from "Richard G Allen &/Or the one minute millionaire, you will!!!

4. Just look through the newspaper and find foreclosures on some unsuspecting little old lady, and be nice to her and help her get kicked out of her house, and you swoop in and take it, and all it's equity, paint it and sell it for twice as much!

5. Invent a toy that every kid wants, like tickle-me-elmo!

6. Look for run-down houses that are worth millions and millions of dollars and haven't sold for a long long time, and ask obscenely low prices, and they'll take it, because agents have to, and since the owners are rich and don't care about money....

These are just some of the ideas that I remember from this awful book. The spam one makes me furious, they are ENCORAGING SPAMMING!!! The other ideas are so stupid, write a best seller, invent something that every American home needs, well FREAKIN DUH! It VERY soon become apparent that the authors are just looking to make THEMSELVES RICH, with a catchy title, and some VERY OLD, VERY TIRED, VERY WORN OUT - OVERDONE Ideas. Like that foreclosure thing. That's older than I am. sheesh. This book has nothing creative, attempts to teach unethical and unrealistic ways of "getting rich" which they focus on spam is the way to get rich in the "one minute" time frame. Like any idiot is going to drop a grand from a spam they got 10 seconds ago. I did read this whole book, just looking for any kind of redeeming factor. None. This book is great for a laugh, and to inspire fury against the authors. I don't usually every write reviews, but this one... inspired me with disgust! This book is an entire waste of time, and I can't believe they must have had good marketers that this book is in the library, etc. I think this is the worse "get rich" book I have ever read.

All the real self help/get rich type books ALL go back to Napoleon Hill. Think and Grow Rich is his best seller. If you are looking for the "secret", start there. Read everything he has, and then read everything his disciples have written (Tony Robbins, Jim Rohn, Zig Ziglar, Dale Carnegie, Earl Nightengale, & Other stuff by Robert Kiyosaki & Thomas J. Stanley PhD, William D. Danko, and you will then have the correct foundation for success. Hey if you've read these and agree with me, yet feel I am missing a few good gems, please email me! This guy (it really is only one person with a agenda) has way too much free time and perhaps makes too much money spamming and selling names.
Robert Allen on the other hand will teach you how to use the internet profitably and with integrity.
