The information was clearly laid out and explained. I feel I have a much better grasp on investing. I had an idea of where I wanted to invest money but this set me on the right path. Not only did it give great advice on what to look for and how to diversify, but also it helped steer me to a investment company that I am very comfortable with.

I read this book knowing very little about stock trading, and I'm glad I did. This book showed all the different ways to invest in stocks and the methods of doing so. With so many ways to trade stocks, from brokers to stock trading websites, it is confusing to determine where to start. Thanks to this book, I now feel confident in the direction I am going in where and how to invest in stocks.

Once Hitler begins his invasions across Europe the displaced couple must find a way to survive the war in a country they both consider foreign. Abel finally takes work, but it requires extensive travel through the war zones, and so Mireille is left essentially alone. With France lost to her, and horribly misfit in wartime Germany, suspected by her neighbors of spying for the Allies, Mireille has to define a life for herself, a life that is as quiet as possible in a dangerous world.

Sins of the Innocent is a lyrical portrait of those harsh years, infused with doubt, anger, and the author’s love of life. These were the years in which Mireille learned the difference between quiet persistence and courage—during WWII in Europe, a time when so many had to find their own small places in history. It was the era that determined who Mireille Marokvia was—and who she still is.

A politically naïve French country girl when she entered the Sorbonne in 1928, Marokvia (Immortelles: Memoir of a Will-o'-the-Wisp), who today is almost 98 years old, soon fell in love with art student Abel; the two enjoyed the Parisian bohemian scene of the 1930s, without worrying much about world events. Even when Hitler took Austria in 1938, no one seemed too shocked—it "was as if we had begun to think he had the right to do what he was doing." Alas, Abel was German and by 1939, he decided to return to Stuttgart. Marokvia followed and the two married, each verifying that they came from four generations of Jew-free ancestry. While both hated the Nazis and refused to collaborate actively, neither felt able to do anything against the regime. Abel avoided the military by working for a propaganda ministry, traveling throughout the Reich sketching for various government publications, while Marokvia variously worked as a weaver, translator and subsistence farmer. They considered themselves innocent of Nazi atrocities, yet sullied by the passive sin of complicity. At times they contemplated suicide or murdering Hitler, but then went on with finding housing, food and work, like other citizens. Readers of last year's A Woman in Berlin will find the similarities (constant suspicion of neighbors, ignorance about Jews) and contrasts (Marokvia reports no rapes or prostitution) illuminating. Engrossing memoir of Nazi Germany from a foreign woman's experience

Sins of the Innocent is the wartime memoir of a French woman who married a German man in interwar Europe and then had to endure the Nazi years in Germany. In Spain when the Spanish civil war breaks out, boyfriend Abel is nearly executed as a spy. He manages to survive, they marry, go on vacations, and try to live a normal life as life in Germany is consumed by Nazism. Abel is an artist and an ardent anti-Nazi. Conscripted when war breaks out, he spends the war in various drawing-related jobs, and manages to stay alive in jobs that are sometimes near the front lines. Meanwhile Mireille endures the war in various locales, and in the telling we learn frankly about life in wartime Germany from the eyes of a foreigner in its midst. Because Mireille is a strong, sympathetic, and acutely observant person in frequently unsafe situations, we get a clear-sighted picture of life in Nazi Germany from a woman's experience and a woman's perspective. It's a book well worth the reading. Smoothly translated and engrossing in its open-eyed view of life in a bizarre world, it's a hard book to put down.

I'd give it a three and a half

Maybe it's unfair of me to give it only 3 1/2 stars, but the writing in this book is nowhere near the quality of the first book of hers I read, "Immortelles". And the story isn't as interesting, either. I wish she had gone into more detail about her feelings and the way the situation impacted them, other than the fact that they were often geographically separated. From a reader's standpoint, it was very emotionally unsatisfying. The best part was when she lived in that little house near the woods. I would have been interested in hearing more about living as a weaver in northern Germany, and a better explanation of why she didn't choose to stay there, while her husband had to travel for work. Much is left unsaid. Her descriptions of flora and fauna are her strong suits; emotions and her rational for making certain decisions are her weakest suits. A book worth reading, but don't pay retail for it... better yet, get it from your library - but "Immortelles" was so sweet and lyrical!

Principles of Health Interoperability HL7 and SNOMED provides a clear introduction to these standards, explaining the core principles for the health IT professional, student, clinician and healthcare manager.

About the Author
Tim Benson graduated from the University of Nottingham as a mechanical engineer and was introduced to healthcare computing at the Charing Cross Hospital in London (now part of Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust), where he evaluated the socio-economic benefits of medical computing systems. In 1980 he founded Abies Informatics Ltd, one of the first GP computer suppliers where, with James Read and David Markwell, they developed the Read Codes, which evolved to become the national standard for UK primary care and one of the two sources of SNOMED CT.  In 1990 he led the first European project team to assess the need for open standards in health informatics, which led to the European Committee for Health Informatics Standards (CEN TC251) and two decades of work on interoperability standards and collaboration with HL7.

A good introduction to a very tough subject

This is a revised review. I reviewed this book shortly after it came out and give it four stars. That was, however, a bit of a grumpy review. Since then I've made this book the mainstay of the health informatics lectures I do for the U of Minnesota. I would now give it four stars without reservation. In this domain there's no rival to this text.

Overall it is a book aimed at an informatics student, written in a telegraphic style that is a good fit for a rather dry but terribly important topic. Only a portion of the book is about HL7 and SNOMED however. Of the 225 pages I found

- 74 on modeling and markup topics better addressed in other books
- 12 pages on SDOs
- 81 pages on HL7 and CDA/CCR/CCD
- 26 on SNOMED
- 8 pages on using HL7 and SNOMED together

Although I would prefer much less coverage of modeling and markup and more on HL7/SNOMED integration, there's still more than enough material to occupy a typical first class in health informatics. This is a better book for my purposes that the informatics textbooks I've used to date.

I hope there will be a 2nd edition. I know I'd buy it!

Required Reading For Anyone Involved in Health IT

Health Interoperability is a very timely topic in the USA in large part because of the HITECH act and the huge amount of tax dollars that are going for Electronic Health Records and Information exchanges. Interoperability is impossible without sophisticated standards for both a grammar and vocabulary for health care that can be semantically interpreted by machines. HL7 V3 RIM is the grammar, and SNOMED-CT is the vocabulary that are needed accomplish the goal of semantic interoperability.

Before this book, a newcomer would have to read thousands of pages of white papers from HL7, IHE, and IHTSDO (International Standards Development Organizations), and attend meetings for years before seeing how these non trivial standards work together.

I'm involved in projects at Kaiser Permanente that rely on SNOMED-CT and HL7. Most of our project managers, or even physician leaders in the organization are not experts in UML, XML, HL7, CDA, or SNOMED. They do not have the opportunity to spend hours reading separate books, attending tutorials or otherwise obtaining the knowledge in this book in an efficient way.

Of course if you really want to know UML, or XML or any of these subjects in great depth, there are "better books" available. But this is the only book that put's it all together. I find it an advantage that it is under 300 pages. An interested person can read this book in just a few days, and will then know what otherwise would have been an epic effort to learn. I have given separate talks on many of these subjects, but in any single talk you could not hope to cover all of the material in this book.
I have just ordered copies of this book to distribute to my project managers and developers.

Great book!

Does a great job of easing into the details of why EHR is such a big deal, and how HL7 and SNOMED play an integral part in a successful EHR strategy. Honestly, I thought this book was going to be torturously dry and boring, but I actually enjoyed the read.

As an aside, I had this book on my desk today at work, and one of the ladies picked it up, read the back cover, told me I must be really smart, smiled, and turned and swished away. If I end up getting lucky because of this book, I'll be sure to come back and post an update.

horrible, find a better book

What I as a student found lacking in this book: 1.) It has many problems, which is a good thing, but this fact is negated by its lack of a publically available solutions manual and numerous and obvious misprints. 2.) Many of the examples gloss over important points to note and I found many vague and cursory. The instructor I had used more detailed material from other textbooks. Many examples also appeared to be used as a substitute for generalized text explainations and diagrams. It also seemed rather vague on the more theroetical aspects of the material. Considering all the other Statics textbooks out there, chances would favor some of them being a lot better than this one. And taking into account the price, I would consider this book a total waste of resources. If you're a mechanical engineering or aerospace student, you'll probably need a better introduction than this if you hope to survive the more advanced courses.

Well though out for the student in mind.

As an engineering student, I found this book very appealing. Its step-by-step presentation of various topics dealing with static structures make it clear and easy to understand for a freshman engineer and can also be used for future quick-reference. Its colorful, crisp diagrams give the student a good opportunity to develop their spatial perception of 3 dimensional objects. Finally, the book's use of calculus is limited and doesn't make the subject intimidating for the first year student.

Great Engineering Mechanics Book

I used this book for my Statics and Solids classes. The book is filled with helpful illustrations and examples that demonstrate the techniques used to solve engineering problems. There are plentiful practice problems that vary greatly in approach and difficulty (of course, my professor assigned only the more difficult ones..). Compared to other engineering textbooks I have used, Engineering Mechanics by Bedford and Fowler succeeds in challenging your mind without overwhelming you, as many engineering books can do.

The "Zen" of Advanced Digital Signal Processing!

Unlike the vast majority of books in the field, which teach only the mathematics of signal processing, Fred teaches you what it really means, and how to make it work. You'll learn extremely efficient signal processing techniques, but even more importantly, you'll gain a much deeper understanding of digital communications that will change the way you approach systems design. From my perspective, this is quite simply the best book available for practitioners who are creating advanced digital communications systems.

The most valuable text ever for Multirate filters and DSP

With excellent clarity, multirate filters are described, derived and then implemented. Any DSP filter designer will benefit from this book, advanced or not. Also, a series of proprietary filter structures have been 'donated' to the DSP community in this book, wherein some of the most effecient filter structures I've ever seen are explained and implemented.

Maybe I am the only one who didn't get much out of this book

I was hoping to get a good understanding of multirate DSP out of this text, having no knowledge of it previously. However, I was not succesful. The text starts out well with a practical illuminating example of the use of multirate signal processing. However, I was not able to absorb much knowledge in the subsequent chapters and gave up on continuing. There are very few equations in this book, which to me was initially promising as I am tired of DSP math books. The author relies more on graphics and figures to explain his point, but I found that the detail was lacking. Perhaps someone with stronger background in this area would be better served by this text.

About the Author
Sally Featherstone has a wealth of experience as a teacher, head teacher and a local authority advisor and inspector. In recent years, alongside her activities in publishing, Sally has continued to build a national reputation as a trainer and consultant in the Primary and Early Years field. Stella Louis is an early years consultant and trainer for the London Borough of Southwark. While working as a nursery nurse in 1991, she attended a lecture on block play by Professor Tina Bruce. It was during this lecture that Stella was introduced to the concept of schemas as a tool to inform planning, provision and observations of babies and young children. Schemas fascinated Stella as she watched her own child, Hannah-Louise, grow explore and develop. In 2002 Stella completed an MA in Early Childhood Education. The introductory sections of this book have been based on Stella's work, whose idea the book was.
