It's "ok "works. I bought this to prepare for a trial and it did not quite give me what I needed. It was hard to find specific areas in it. It seemed to be an effort to communicate with lawyers... and as a lawyer... I didn't get it.

Don't buy this book

The title promises a lot. But it doesn't deliver. This book is muddled and confused. It begins with a rather high browed treatment of the maths behind DSP then goes on to attempt to provide examples in C++. The examples are poor and unclear. The supplied code compiles under VC++ but not under any other platform without substantial reworking.
Over 100 pages of this 500 page book are devoted to a general discussion of the C++ language. Why? If I wanted this type of material I would consult my C++ manual. Here are C++ programmers who want to tell us the do's and don't's of the language, that feel the need to test newed pointers for NULL after allocating and before deleting!
As far as the rest of the book is concerned I found the examples and text unclear, pedantic and frankly quite useless. I will keep my copy only because I want to use the theoretical material. But this material was written for maths graduates - pages upon pages of proofs and derivations that provide little insight into the underlying principles and serve nothing. Hold off and buy something more usable.

I don't recommend this book

I am a computer scientist and I am trying to learn DSP.

I thought getting this book would help me with this process, because it seemed to be a book for computer scientists but it is not.

==This book is intended for those who are already familiar with DSP and want to explore C++.==

If you are a computer scientist and aren't familiar with DSP you will need another book to understand the DSP side of the book.

I got the book with no CD. That was very frustrating. Customer support was really bad. Make sure you get one with a CD.

Once I got the code (I found it on an ftp server somewhere, so I don't know if it is the latest disc, maybe there is a better updated one),I had to change many things. The main problems where:

The majority of projects don't compile in Visual Studio 2008.
The author uses PRE-STANDARD C++. This means that many things he uses don't exist today:
+flags like fstream nocreate don't exist today
+Include preprocessor directives with .h extensions will force you to rewrite things.
+I went through hell to fix(BYTE) errors.
+Some for loops miss variable type declaration.

All in all, this book is completely outdated in the programming side, and very confusing in the theoretical side.

Why reinvent the wheel...

A well written book good for both introduction to DSP and for advanced users. The CD has lots of C++ code written for the Windows environment which I find easier and much quicker to prototype DSP apps than using simulation languages or mathematics packages. The CD is well worth the price of the book. The code can read and write .wav files and includes a plotting application which is ok.

About the Author
Mordechai ('Motti') Inbari is the author of Jewish Fundamentalism and the Temple Mount: Who Will Build the Third Temple?, which won the American-Israeli Cooperative Enterprise Best Publication Award in Israel Studies (2008) and the Ben Shemesh Best Dissertation Award for the Study of Zionism and the State of Israel (2007). His work has appeared in Israel Studies, Hebrew Union College Annual, Nova Religio, Modern Judaism, Journal of Church and State and Studies in Contemporary Jewry. Prior to his appointment at the University of North Carolina, Pembroke, he served as a Post-Doctoral Associate at the Schusterman Center for Israel Studies at Brandeis University.

The Framework gathers existing global standards and practices to help organizations understand, communicate, and manage their cyber risks.

For organizations that don’t know where to start, the Framework provides a road map.

For organizations with more advanced cybersecurity, the Framework offers a way to better communicate with their CEOs and with suppliers about management of cyber risks.

Organizations outside the United States may also wish use the Framework to support their own cybersecurity efforts.

Each of the Framework components (the Framework Core, Profiles, and Tiers) reinforces the connection between business drivers and cybersecurity activities. The Framework also offers guidance regarding privacy and civil liberties considerations that may result from cybersecurity activities.

The Framework Core is a set of cybersecurity activities and informative references that are common across critical infrastructure sectors.

The cybersecurity activities are grouped by five functions -- Identify, Protect, Detect, Respond, Recover -- that provide a high-level view of an organization’s management of cyber risks.

The Profiles can help organizations align their cybersecurity activities with business requirements, risk tolerances, and resources.

Companies can use the Profiles to understand their current cybersecurity state, support prioritization, and to measure progress towards a target state.

The Tiers provide a mechanism for organizations to view their approach and processes for managing cyber risk.

The Tiers range from Partial (Tier 1) to Adaptive (Tier 4) and describe an increasing degree of rigor in risk management practices, the extent to which cybersecurity risk management is informed by business needs, and its integration into an organization’s overall risk management practices.

Though the adoption of the Framework is voluntary, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has established the Critical Infrastructure Cyber Community (C3) Voluntary Program as a public-private partnership to increase awareness and use of the Cybersecurity Framework.

The C3 Voluntary Program will connect companies, as well as federal, state, local, tribal, and territorial partners, to DHS and other federal government programs and resources that will assist their efforts in managing their cyber risks.

Participants will be able to share lessons learned, get assistance, and learn about free tools and resources that can help them.

Federal executive branch civilian agencies are evaluating how they will use the Framework to enhance the protection of their systems, and State and local governments are also looking at how they can leverage capabilities found in the Framework to assist managing their cybersecurity risk.

DHS is developing the Voluntary Program to respond to state and local government needs, and it is examining incentives tailored to these stakeholders.

Philosophical and Dense, Slightly Out of Date

This book is mostly about photography's place in the world, how it relates to other arts, and the long-lasting question of whether it can be conceived of as an art. Also, there are good discussions about whether photography is or is not evidence and whether it is or is not a truthful representation. In other words, this is mostly a book about the philosophy of photography, if you will. And, while short, it's dense and full of discussion.

The book's largest flaw is that it glosses over digital photography until the end. For a book published in 2006, this may or may not be acceptable. But, then when the treatment of digital photography does come in a final chapter, that chapter is too simplified at best and verges on incorrect at worst. For example, at one point, the author indicates that it is impossible to detect tampering with an image. While it's true that digital technologies do make wholesale manipulation difficult to detect with the human eye, that's long been the case in photography. In the realm of the digital, there is a lot of work that has gone into algorithms that can detect manipulation. Also, if one is really interested in verifying that a photo is authentic for news purposes, Canon and Nikon (and maybe others) do have software solutions that rely on cryptographic signing to authenticate an image was made with a particular camera at a particular time and whether it was modified. With an attached GPS feed, even location data can be verified.

Still, even with a few glaring issues which seem to be the result of revising the text over time, the book is a thought provoking read. I'd have given 4 stars except for the poor treatment of digital technology in photography.

One further note for the Kindle edition, the font used is inconsistent and not as pleasant to read as the default font used by most of the other Kindle books I've read so far. There are several places where letters are broken. It's simply not as pleasant a read as other books from a font perspective.

A great introduction

I really like this book and I am considering making it mandatory for my freshman photo students at NYU.

Edwards does a fantastic job of covering the major movements and critical theories in photography without endorsing any one in particular. It's a slim little book can be stashed in a camera bag (easily lost, I am ordering my second copy) and read in bite sized nuggets.

The best part is that he encourages further study by giving you just enough to be interested and then want more.

It's true that it's a bit dated, but as someone who writes about photography, I can attest to the fact that it is fairly impossible to keep up with technology that is progressing so quickly. My last book was outdated before it hit the shelves.

Use this book to establish a framework for the history of photography, then dig deeper on your own

A Rough Read. The Ideas Do Not Flow Well.

This book is not awful but not great. If you can focus hard and think deeply, you might love it. It has great insight into the philosophy behind photography and what exactly it is or is not; or how it may or may not be viewed. It primarily fails to keep the focus of the reader. The author's thought processes can be difficult to follow all the way through. You get the point if you keep reading, but it's difficult to get to that point. I have to read this book for a class and I often find myself having to go back and re-read paragraphs after I finish them so I can piece everything in the middle together.
